KIWI SWIMMING CLUB.

SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL HELD. BATHING BEAUTIES PARADE. Never before lias such a huge crowd packed the Municipal Baths, as on Tuesday evening, and it is safe to say that rarely, if ever, before has such a successful swimming meeting at the Kiwi Club’s carnival been held in Dunedin. The wonderful success of the evening goes to show that where the general public will not patronise the every-day stereotyped swimming tournament, it will 9ttend in hundreds if sufficiently intriguing novelties are introduced Of course, the Beauty Bathing Contest attracted most attention, and 14 of Dunedin s best formed and bonniest lassies paraded before the judges, the Mayor, Mr H. L. M.P., and Messrs J. T. Paul and J. P. Northey, whose task in separating the winners was no easy one. _ Whether the public is tired of the shingle, or whether a good head of hair is a novelty nowadays, it is hard to say, but it is a curious fact that the only two competitors with long hair received the applause of the crowd. The winner of the contest was found in Miss Cassic Benfell, of 6 Perth avenue, with -Miss Lilian Matthews, of 30 Eglinton road Momington, second, with just half a point less, and Miss Amy Fraser, of Ettrick street, Kaikorai, third Strangely enough, M»ss Matthews was one of the long-naired competitors who received such an ovation from the crowd. By her win, Miss Benfell is thus acclaimed as Dunedin’s Queen of Beauty. Another novelty was a display of fancy and plain diving by Miss Mabel Morrison, who gave a graceful and finished exhibition. This little lady appears to improve at every appearance and he* diving reflects great credit on her coach and teacher, Mr E. H. Olds.
