WELLINGTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) July 31. A big contingent of Nortti Island horses" have gone south this week to race at Riccarton. Wednesday's batch included Income, who is said to he a good juniper. He was allowed to drop out of the race he was in at the Christchurch Hunt Club s meeting, and may make his first appearance in the big race, as a penalty for the Trial Hurdles would probably stop him. He is to be ridden by H. Gray, who had his first mount in a jumping race in the Dominion on the concluding oav at Gisborne, when lie won on Hyrax. Alteration has been at Trentham since he raced here. Fie showed signs of soreness, and as the accommodation booked has ’been cancelled lie may not be at Riccarton. i t ii The racing chronograph made by tne Gaunt Proprietary (Ltd.), of Melbourne, for the Wellington Racing Club has arrived, and will be in use at the Spring meeting in October. The Christchurch Hunt Club held ite annual meeting at Riccarton in fine weatliei, end there was a large attendance, mostly attracted by the fact that the fixture ranks as a curtain-raiser to the Grand National meeting, several of the horses engaged in the principal events at the Grand National meeting appearing on the card. The track was in excellent order lor a jumping meeting; a bit on the soft side, but still providing fairly firm going. There was not muct interest taken in the two opening events on the card, which were both landed by the only two favourites which scored during the day. Two of the winners were the greatest outsiders in tlieir fields. These were Rawene ana Waetea. Interest really commenced with the Brabazon Welter, for which several Winter Cup candidates were saddled up. When it came to business nothing proved capable of seriously challenging Broadwood, who won easily Ravenna made up a good deal of ground to get second, as she was not sighted until well into the straight. Prince Ferouz ran a good race, a 3 he was slow to move at the start, but Los Ambus, who started favourite, found the distance and the class beyond him. Ho will have to improve to win over more ground. Bonnie Winkie ran a fair race, and pulled up well. Avispado was always near the leaders until coming up the running, when he faded out, as did Wliarfedale, who made the early running until headed b.v the winner. Ihapotoa was another who was well up in the early stages, but dropped away. Deucalion never got into the picture, but Clareina ran a fair race. Summing it up, it looks as though Broadwood will prove one of the hardest to beat in the Winter Cup, and Ravenna and Bonnie Winkie may improve on to-day’s form. Rawene created the surprise of the day by winning the Maiden Stakes, in which the placed let and Weeta practically had it to themselves. Carawock went out favourite for the Homeby Steeples, which Passin’ Through (after being always well up), won comfortably. Mettle Drift failed to see it out, and was cut out of third place by Carawock, who promises to be one of the very dangerous division in the Grand National Steeples. He was well back until landing over the last fence, and was travelling on well at the finish. Pamplona ran an excellent race, and was never fan away, and he also did not lose any friends by his display. Silverton was going well when he ran off, but his rider took a risk in racing up to the leader, and found that when he reached the fence he had very little room, with the result that he got squeezed off. Passin' Through must be dangerous in his future engagements, and Carawock and Pamplona will be much better suited by the longer distance in the big steeplechase next week. Judging by the way he won the Open Hurdles Lochson must play a strong hand in the G rand National Hurdles, as he won very easily. O f the others it may be found that the extra distance will suit Royal Star and perhaps Le Forte. The winner’s town suggests that Nukumai, who won on both days at the Wellington meeting, will probably start favourite next week if he is as good on firm going as lie is on soft ground. He comfortably defeated Lochson each dav at Trentham. Ruby Ring was a strong fancy in the Flying Handicap, and Lady Gay also had a si rang following. The favourite' followed the leaders into the straight, and just failed to get amongst the money. Moorland was always in the van, but Waetea worried him out of it at the end. Charlatan was made favourite for the Lawford Steeples, and lie was the only horse to complete the course without mishap. Taralga wont out at the first fence, and Kauwhero, •who was a long way back, fell at the mite post. Meanwhile Charlatan and Red Sol had supplanted Blue Streak in the lead, and they travelled together along the back. Thei" went at the Kennels double together, and Red Sol hooked the second leg and lest two or three lengths. He was drawing up to the leader going to the second last jump, but tipped out. Blue Streak followed suit and Intolerance refused. This left Charlatan to come home at his leisure, and he finished nearly the length of the straight in front of the remounted Blue Streak. Intolerance also completed the course. None of the unshipped riders were injured. Charlatan has improved since he won at the South Canterbury Hunt Chib’s meeting” where he also won over fences. Red Sol appeared to have a fair chance of winning if he had stood up, as he is a more seasoned horse than the winner, who, however, promises to develop into a good sort’ over fences. Starters: Charlatan, Red Sol, Taralga, Kauwhero, Intolerance, Blue Streak. Adjutor was backed down to an odds-on chance in the Kennels Hurdles, and after the field ran in fairly close order he came away in the straight and won easily. Grim Joke looked a bit short of work. The race should sharpen him up a good deal. Night Raid came down at the last hurdle, and did no damage. Starters: Adjutor, Grim Joke, Swindassa, Night Raid. Tinokaha was the only one struck out of the Brabazon Welter. Los Ambus was made a good favourite from the opening of the betting, whilst Prince Ferouz and Broadwood were also in good demand. They were in good line when the barrier went up, and Wliarfedale led out from Los Ambus, Broadwood, Bonnie Winkie, Ihapotoa, and Avispado. They ran in that order until nearing the home turn, when Bonnie Winkie went back a bit. Whavfedale led into the straight, but once heads were well in line for home

Broadwood took charge and came on to win comfortably by two lengths and a-half from Ravenna, who made up a lot of ground, as she was well ba-ck 'in the early etage-s. Wharfedale and Prince Ferouz came next, and then Bonnie AVinkie, Clareina, and Lcs Ambus. Avispado faded out, and so did Los Ambus. Broadwood won so well that he is sure to grow into strong favour for the Winter Cup. Ravenna, who began near the rails, was never sighted until she arrived on the scene in the straight, and ran an excellent race to get second. Bonnie Winkie also did well to finish close to the placed lot. Starters: Los Ambus, Prince Ferouz, Broadwood, Wharfedale, Ihapotoa, Bonnie Winkie, Avispado, Will Oakland, Prosperity, Ravenna, Deucalion, Clareina, Dame Straitlace, Stream, Giantkiller, Petunia, Wapping. Weeta. was made favourite for the Maiden Stakes, in which Chickwheat, Winkie’e Best, Revel, Cochy Bondhu, Rawene, and Te Anau Lad were the leaders into the straight. Inside the distance Chickwheat and Winkie’s Best were fighting it out. when Rawene got up on the rails and won by a neck from Chickwheat, who beat Winkie’s Best by half a length. Weeta was a length away fourth, followed by Cochy Bondhu and Te Anau Lad. Starters: Weeta, Escarpment, Te Anau Lad, Chickwheat, Winkie’s Best, Hyperion, Kilcannich, Espada, Cochy Bondhu, Revel, Squint, Moiselle, Jack, Kilrain, Angelica, Watermint, Frilford, Treoella, Rawene. All on the card went to the post for the Homeby Steeplechase. It was a good betting race, and most of the field, except Whipcord, looked ready for more important business ahead. Pamplona has fined down since racing a± Wellington. Mettle Drift, Passin’ Through, and Silverton, followed by Pamplona and Tigerland, led over the stand double. Silverton dropped back a bit, and was racing up to the leaders when he ran off at Cutts’s. Mettle drift led Tigerland and Passin’ Through along the back, and then came Pamplona, Dick, and San Forte. Dick ran off at the Kennels double. Passin’ Through closed up on Mettle Drift as they turned for home, and, leading over the .last jump, came on to win comfortably by three lengths from Carawock, who drew up in the run from th,e. last . jump and beat Mettle Drift by half a length. Tigerland was a short length away fourth, and half a length in front of Pamplona, who was followed by San Forte, Polthogue, and Whipcord. Starters: Carawock, Silverton, Pamplona, Passin’ Through, Tigerland. Whipcord, San Forte, Mettle Drift. Dick. Polthogue. In the Open Hurdles, Royal Fame, Mis 3 Garance, Fort Regal, Sir Roseberry, and Royal Star led over the first hurdle. At Cutts’s. Royal Fame had Sir Roseberry and Fort Regal in close attendance. They were followed bv Maunga, Boomerday, and Tinohaka as they ran along the back. Fort Regal commenced to drop back. Going to the far turn, where Lochson moved up. Rounding the Top .Lochson and Sir Roseberry went on from Roval Fame, and then Santiago moved up to the leaders. Lochson and Santiago showed the Way over the last hurdle, and the former coming on won easily by three lengths from Santiago, who heat Sir Roseberry bv about five lengths. Then came Roval Star, Maunga. Boomerday, Le Forte, and Tinohaka. The winner scored with his pilot looking round in the run home, and evidentlv had a lot in hand. There is. of course, nearly another mile to go in the Grand National Hurdles, as todav’s race was run over a mile and a-half and a distance. Starters : Boomerday. Lochson, Tinokaha, Sir Roseberry, Demand. Santiago. Maunga. Le Forte. Royal Fame Roval Star. Bhie Socks, Miss Garance, Fort Regal. Camel Amble was a strong order for the Hunters’ Plate, but after Cairnmuir led into the straight Bullford came along and won without being asked to extend, himself. Cairnmuir just managed to stall off Camel Amble and heat him by a neck. Kauwhero finished a long wav back. Starters: Camel Amble. Bullford, Cairnmuir, Kauwhero. In the Flving Handicap, Moorland. Waetea. Ruby Ring, and Lady Gav and Miss Minerva was the order to the straight, where Moorland was leading Waetea, who wore down Moorland and beat him bv a neck. Ruby Ring wa.e half a length away third, followed by Tussore, Star Ranger, Sartist. and Ladv Gay. Starters: Rnby King, Ladv Gay. Tussore, Sartist, Moorland, Miss Minerva, Thorndale, Star Ranger, Brown Lady, Glument, Bonnywood, Warseer, Waetea.
