HOCKEY.

NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION, CHRISTCHURCH, July 22. At a meeting of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Hockey Association the Otago Association forwarded challenges for the Rankin and Hatch Cups, and the Otago, Auckland, and Wellington Associations- forwarded challenges for the Zanol Cup. It was decided that the following dates be arranged for the Zanol Cup matches: Canterbury v. Otago, August 9, at Christchurch, the winner to play Wellington on either August 16 or 23, and the victors to play Auckland on September 6. SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT. The grounds after the recent wet weather were very heavy and almost unfit for play on Saturday afternoon. The seven-a-side tournament was conducted without a hitch by Messrs Wallace, Northey, and Starr (referees), Mr J. A. Robinson (supervisor), and Mr W. Randall (timekeeper). University A won four matches and drew one, finishing up with 9 points, and won the Hayward Cup for the season. Following are the position of the teams competing: —-

NELSON, July 26. The Wellington senior and junior hockey representatives met Nelson this afternoon in perfect weather. The senior game resulted in a draw —one goal each —-Nelson holding the upper hand until a few minutes before time. Dee scored for Nelson and W. Hood for Wellington. On the play the visitors were rather lucky to make the match a draw. It was a good game, and there was some clever stick work and hard, clean hitting. In the junior game Nelson won by three points to one, after a very creditable exhibition. Vaughan, Allport, and Beet scored for the winners, and Tustin for the losers. In both matches the Nelson forwards were superior. CHRISTCHURCH COMPETITION. CHRISTCHURCH July 26. St. Albans 4 v. Technical nil. Selwyn B nil v. Technical B nil. Selwyn 4 v. Sydenham 1. SWIMMING. Eve (Sydney) won the national diving championship of England. July 26. Eve had an easy victory in the national graceful diving championship. OTAGO HUNT. The weekly meet of the Otago Hunt was held on Mr T. Dalziel’s property at Mount Grand. Those present were: —Messrs Brunton (master), Edgar (deputy), Mesdames Conn, Smytlie, Dalziel, Wilson, and Misses Cave and Greer.slade, Messrs Dalziel, J. M‘Kay, Geddes, Crandell, Murdoch, Smith, Anderton, M’Donald, Crawford, Wilson, Cassells, D. Robertson, Waite, Sinclair, L. Mowa-t, Banbridge, S. Robertson, D. Mheeler (huntsman), D. O’Connor (whip). ATHLETIC AND CYCLINC UNION. The annual general meeting of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union (Incorp.) Otago Centre was held in Mr H. Divers;s board room on Tuesday before a large attendance of delegates. Mr R. B. Meek occupied the chair. The President, in welcoming the delegates, said that it was unfortunate that the meeting could not have been held during Show Week, as the attendance would have been even larger. He extended a hearty welcome to Mr Kennedy (Geraldine), secretary of the New Zealand Council. Tile president also referred to the apology for absence from Hr Wylie, stating that it was the first annual meeting which he had missed. A letter was received from the North Canterbury Centre urging the local centre to hold a distance race with a view to sending a representative to take part in the T’imaruChristchunch road race.—lt was pointed out that the police were opposed to cycle road racing in Dunedin.—Mr Laws moved that the Taieri County Council and the Moggie’ Borough Council be written to asking that the embargo on cycle road racing be removed. —The motion was carried. It was further decided that the winner of the

North Otago road race should represent the Otago Centre, and that the sum of £3 3« be given towards bis expenses. Mr Meek and Mr Laws both commented on the neport and balance sheet, stating that they -showed a very satisfactory state of affairs.—The motion for the adoption of the report an-d balance sheet was carried. The President pointed out that in connection with the meeting of sports bodies called by the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition directors, the Otago Centre had not been asked to send a delegate. He said they were only "cash amateurs’’ and the Otago Centre was the biggest in the dominion It was likely that a conference would be held here during the Exhibition. — Mr Forbes (Oamaru) strongly protested against the action of the Exhibition authorities, and moved that they be approached on the matter. —Mr Rennick, in seconding the motion, pointed out that all the sports clubs except the Otago Centre bad received a notice.—The motion was carried. —Mr Ferguson said that he had attended a subsequent meeting and had not got a hearing.— Mr Read said that a sports meeting had been held during the Christchurch Exhibition, and he did not see why one should not be run by the Otago Centre in this city.

Mr Polwouth moved that delegates suould not be sent to the annual conference. —The motion was oarried. Mr Meek moved as a remit that the next Dominion Conference be held in Dunedin, in view of the holding of the Exhibition. —The motion was carried. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr Matheson; vice-presidents, Messrs Read and M‘Kay ; committee—Messrs W. Rennick, Wylie, Varcoe, Valentine, Lyall, Ferguson, Bruce, Polworth, Meek, and Rowlands solicitor, Mr J. Lang; auditor, Mr Davidson: secretary, Mr Forbes. Mr Polworth moved that the following remit be sent to the iNew Zealand Conference:—"lf, after having entered for a meeting, any competitor wins or is placed in any event held prior to such meeting, he shall notify the club or society of such win or placing before he competes at a later meeting. Failure of notification will render him liable to disqualification.''—The motion was carried. After the business was over refreshments were handed round, and Mr Forbes proposed the health of the retiring secretary (Mr D. F. M'Kay).—Messrs Rennick and Polworth spoke in appreciative terms of the work of Ir M’Kay, and the toast was drunk after the singing of ‘“For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.’’ The toast of the retiring president was then honoured. —Mr Read, in presenting Mr Meek with a suitably inscribed gold medal, referred to his past interest in sport.—Mr Meek suitably responded. The toast of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union was also honoured.
