AUCKLAND TOPICS.

Sv

Digger.

With the weights out for the hurdles and steeplechase, chief interest is now centred in the Great Northern double. In the hurdle race Ngata occupies pride ot place witn the steadier of 11.12, a weight that is likely to trouble him before the two and a-balf miies are covered. Starland, 11.5, lias 41b more than he carried to victory in the Brighton Hurdles at the recent A.R.C. meeting, but by the manner in which he finished suggested that a journey extending another half-mile, would not trouble him. Explorer, 10.10,' has nothing to complain of, though his recent form would hardly be a recommendation for the event. Tinokaha, 10.6, and Royal Abbey, 10.2, are. two that will command plenty of attention. Last year the pair ran a dead heat for second place. En Route, 9.9, is one of the early fancies. Last year he failed to complete the course, but may be more fortunate on this occasion. Pine Arch and King Pellicule on the 9.8 mark are a pair of local candidates that appear to be nicely placed. The latter registered a very easy win in a two mile hurdle race at Avondale a couple of weeks back. Fourteen figure on the minimum mark, of which May Bruce reads the most likely to see the journey out. At first glance Royal Abbey, En Route, and Tinokaha are a trio whose prospects will be seriously considered. Oakleigh figures at the head of the list in the Great Northern Steeplechase, and in awarding him 12.2 the handicapper lias not been 100 severe on the son of St. Ariians, though it is a big weight to carry over the Eilerslie hill three times. Pitts, worth and Starland, on the 11.4 mark, have plenty of weight. Starland’s recent form in the Autumn Steeplechase (three miles) would hardly recommend him for a longer journey. Glenotus 11.0 will have jilenty of friends. With 101 b less in the saddle he scored a very comfortable win in the Autumn Steeplechase at Eilerslie a few weeks back. Sea De’il 10.8, who won the event two years ago, is nicely placed. There is a useful lot below the 10.0 mark, and there appears to he every prospect of the winner coming from that quarter. Royal Abbey 9.13 has not yet raced over the Eilerslie country, but in a recent schooling task he showed he is quite at home over the big fences Last year's winner, Mary Bruce, 9.10, has been given every opportunity. The same remark applies to Dick 9.9. who ran second last year. On the handicap Mary Bruce, Glenotus, and Royal Abbey appear to he nicely placed. Young Thurnhani is shapinq- well in his schooling work, and should strip at his best next month. At- the A.R.C. Winter meeting last year he won the Hunt Club Cup and a minor hurdle race. Pine Arch has been schooled over (lie big fences recently, his exhibitions being very promising. Never Despair is getting through a lot of work over the big fences. Though he may not be in the front rank, the Robert the" Bruce gelding is a. useful jumper. Jollie Princess is progressing satisfactorily in her efforts over the small sticks, and may turn out useful at the game. Miss Melva, who has proved useful over hurdles, shapes very well in her schooling tasks over the big fences. Roval Present appears to have benefited with ” recent racing, and should strip in good form next month. Musketoon is moving along nicely in Ins work. The imported horse goes well when the going is on the heavy side. The stablemates Emerald Hill and Golden Glass are hitting out well in their work. The laller is a very promising sort:. RAGING IN NEW ZEALAND, OAMARU RACES. First Day—Friday, May IG. The Oamaru meeting was opened in dull and rather cold weather, and the attendance was on the moderate side. The track provided good going, and the card for the day some excellent racing. ’Frisco Mail was kept too far out of his ground in the Empire Hurdles, and his belated run gave Petunia a lucky win. Los Ambus scored

easily in the Redcaslle Welter, and Clareina just beat a hot favourite in Kiifane in the principal event. Prince Ferouz ran a fair race, but Bonnie Winkie, after beginning well and travelling like a possible winner up to about six furlongs, faded out. Lady Blissful did well to finish close to the placed lot after losing ground at the start owing to her fractiousness at the post. ‘San Salvador was staying on towards the finish, but Lady Blissful,- if she had got well away, might have troubled the first two. Sun Up outstayed Prolilimau in the Trial Plate, but had to survive an inquiry into a cross near the finish. Prompter was coming on well towards the end of the race. In the IMoeraki Welter Coastguard looked a winner down the running, but Carmine worried him out of it at the finish. Vasilkov was coming on well, but Vice Royal, who started favourite, was never dangerous. Gold Town was well back m the early stages of the Waikaura Handicap, hut came with a great run. and just heat Eaton Bells, whose rider appeared to think he was winning 100yds from borne, and took matters rather "too confidently. The Heaver was a pronounced fancy in the final event, and just beat Bella Lake in a good race. Avispaoo covered a lot of ground, and this cost nim a good chance of winning. During the day £BO9I 10s went through the lotalisator. as against- £9582 last year. Results:— EMPIRE HURDLE HANDICAP, Of 150sovs. One mile and a-half. I—Mr F. It. Time, lmin 15 3-ssec Second Day—Saturday, Alay 17. lna Oamaru meeting concluded in fine weather, and the attendance, although showing an improvement over ttie previous day. was still a bit disappointing in numbers, j he card again provided some very iriteresting racing, and close finishes were the order ot the day. In fact, taking the programme all round, it provided the best racing ever seen on the course. ’Fii-co Alail was again kept well away from the leaders in the hurdle 'ace, and his rider did not make a move until nearing the last jump. ’Frisco Mail then laced past the leaders and w r on well at the finish. Prompter also scored comfortably, as. after dropping hack soon after ibe start, he came round on the outside and gave nothing a chance with him at the finish. lie was evidently benefited by his race on the first day. Kiifane was a pronounced fancy for the President’s Handicap, and he won cleverly. Los Ambus had no difficulty in accounting for the moderate lot in the Waitangi Handicap, Vasilkov had the luck of a good run on the rails, and this materially contributed towards his win. After the race' an inquiry was held into his running on the previous day, and then ihe judge’s verdict was allowed to stand. Goldtown outclassed the opposition in his race and won galloping away at the finish. The worst start of (he meeting took place in the final event. CONTROL OF TROTTINC. REGISTRATION OF HORSES. CHRISTCHURCH, May 13. The recommendation of the jury in the Kingsdale ringing-in case that the New Zealand Trotting Association should exercise greater care in accepting the registration of horses, was referred to by Mr P. Selig (president of the association) at today’s meeting of the board. Mr Selig said he had been looking into the registrations very closely and he considered it was necessary that the restrictions should be tightened up. It did not follow, however, that the association had not already done so. It was well to be wise after the event, and, no doubt, the board could be more careful. He would like to see the rules tightened up still more so as to put a stop to wrong-doing. He considered that the office staff had done very well in the past and now that matters were being cleaned up and they were getting rid of a lot of men who were inclined to go along the crooked path—they could tighten up the rules and amend the application form. One of the detectives had suggested certain additions to the form. Mr R. A. Armstrong expressed the opinion that ill numerous cases the secretaries of clubs took a lot for granted in respect to horses when applications for registration came before them. Mr Selig said that no doubt a great deal of looseness had occurred in tnat way. Some secretaries looked on registration as more or less formal. Mr Armstrong suggested that a circular might be sent to the secretaries of clubs. Mr Selig: “We have already done so. It is always possible to find loop-holes in the rules. That is why it is advisable that this association should be represented at the conference. The alterations might be brought up as remits to the conference.” RACINC ON THE WEST COAST. CHRISTCHURCH, May 13. Mr Sellers, secretary of the New Zealand Racing Conference, has returned after a three weeks’ visit to the West Coast, with a very high opinion of the lacing clubs on the Coai-t, and is full of optimism of th« future of racing there. " The standard of racing on the. Coast is very high indeed,” said Mr Sellers. “ Tho management of the clubs and the conduct of the meetings are excellent, and the racing I w’tnessed was mo3t interesting. It was most pleasing and surprising to find such a high standard

of racing on the Coast. There been a \vi tng impression in the minds of many rs egoers regarding racing in that part of Lf* dominion. The clubs show by their tf.orts that they are anxious to maintain a, bgh standard. With the attracting of a better class of horse to tile meetings a great increase in West Coast racing is antl<>pated, and a good deal of money will bo spent as opportunity offers to cater for visitors. I would like to see more owners visit the West Coast, so that they might see for themselves how' good the conditions are.” , HORSES RETURN FROM AUSTRALIA. WELLINGTON, May 13. Rapine arrived from Sydney, fit and well. George Price, a well-known trainer, has come over on a short visit. Cameron also returned with The Hawk and other horses after a successful visit.
