A GAMING PROSECUTION. SUBSTANTIAL PENALTY IMPOSED. W ELL IN GTO N, June 14. Reginald Chariw Stone, charged at the Magistrate’s Court to-day with using premises in Panama street as a common gaming house, pleaded not guilty. An application that the hearing should stand over until the trial of Stone at the Supreme Court on a charge of boohmaking was refused. Chief-detective Kemp, in prosecuting, said that accused was the holder of a license for a billiard room which was watched. A probationary constable, who visited the premises, secured a bet, and later on betting on an extensive scale was witnessed by the police. The evidence showed that a constable put 10s on Kareoa at Fielding, but on calling to oollect, the dividend was refused payment by Stone. Other police evidence was given regarding the linding of day cards and Stone's notebook, showing sums of money entered opposite the names of horses. 'Jlte detective stated that during the raid he answered the ’phone, receiving two beta. The Magistrate held the charge proved, and imposed a fine of £75 or two months 1 imprisonment.
