TAPANUI.

June 6. —Good winter weather is being experienced here, and so far we have had no snow, .although it has been predicted. The shortest day is approaching, and after that the back of the winter has been broken Farmers are enabled to get along with ploughing, and a few weeks dry weather would see work well advanced. lne winter is welcome, and root crops would not s* and much feeding. Some very prime wethers have left this district lately for Burnside and the freezing* works. Sporting.—The district football clubs have iust completed their first round of matches for a banner competition. The result leaves the Tapanui and Heriot teams on even terms. Last season these teams contested the final, and they are shaping to repeat the peilormar.ee. However, some of the younger clubs are coming along, and it would not o c surprising if they shake up the leaders. Certainly°it would be encouraging to the young players anl stimulate the older ones who are apt to forget that constant training and practice are necessary for success on tlie football field. The hockey players are keen on their game, and the .links are well patronised A considerable sum was spent improving the links this year, and players are leaping the benefit. . Scholastic. —Schools are closed for winter holidays. I notice the Tapanui School buildings residence, and Technical School are all being repainted, the hoard having a strong force ox men engaged. Road Improvements. The luapeka County Council has had Messrs Sim and Sim’s motor lorry employed for some time past nutting out metal on county roads. The lorry makes short work of metalling a. few miles of road. A considerable quantity of Logan’s Point metal has lately been railed up the branch for Edievale and Tapanui roads. At present the (Station road is receivin'" a coating of the durable blue metal which° should serve for many years. Government Buildings.—Some much-needed repairs have been effected at the local Police Station. The residence and outbuildings have been painted, and a substantial post and wire fence replaces a. dilapidated gorge and broom fence. The courthouse also wants attention, tvs it is crumbling away under treatment by the white pine borer. Winter Show. —The Dunedin Winter Show, as usual, has attracted a large number of visitors from this part. Show Week has for years past been the popular outing with many farmers and others, enabling them to combine pleasure and business.
