FIRES. NELSON, January 25. The recent, fire at the Onakaka iron and steel works will not delay operations f>r any length of time. Mr George Fraser, consulting engineer, estimates that the rebuilding of the casthouse. blacksmith’s shop, engine-house, boiier-house, along with repairs to machinery and the replacing or tools and beltings, etc., will run into £2750, while the insurance on the damaged property was £2OOO. The directors have decided to proceed forthwith with the work of reconstruction. HOKITIKA January 25. Longford Hall, adjoining Graham’s Hotel at Kokotahi, was totally destroyed by fire at 3 o’clock this morning. The hotel was saved with difficulty. No insurances are available. FKILDING, January 26. The Kimbolton Hotel, owned by Brown Brothers, and licensed to W. Fay, was completely destroyed by fire last night, with the whole of the contents. The occupants barely escaped. The building was of wood, aud fairly old. It had about 15 rooms. The insurances are not available.
One of the most famous “doss-houses” in Whitechapel has been converted into a pleasure palace.
