CASUALTIES.
The body of Charles Monk Nicholls, a farmer, was found covered with blood in a hut at Ongarue on the 24th. A rifle was alongside the body. The deceased was 42 years of age, a returned soldier, and single. The body of George Wiseley Fortt, single, a ploughrn,:n at Runnui Station, near Taihape, was found floating in a dam a mile from the homestead. At the inquest a verdict of suicide whilst temporarily insane was returned. A man named Scott Baker, a well-known commission agent in Christchurch, shot himself on T. Croft’s farm at Omihi on the 25th inst. Lawrence Peterson, aged nine years, w’as admitted to the Dunedin Hospital’on Thursday afternoon, suffering from a fracture to his right leg, caused through a fall from a gate-post. The boy, who comes from Duntroon, was spending a holiday with relatives residing in Bridgman street. Charles Sutcliffe, single, aged 32 years, of Orinoco, was drowned in the Motueka River on the 25th while carting firewood. He missed the ford, and his horse was swept off its feet. His companion reached the bank safely. Shortly after 6 p.m. on the 26th a man named Gordon Abernethv, 32 years of age, was knocked off a cable car going up Rattray street by another car which was coming down. It appears that Abernethy w’as “strap hanging” on the up carbon which there were several others standing on the outside, and when a little below Arthur street he was struck by a down car, which had very few passengers on it. He was thrown to the ground and received a lacerated wound on the right side of the scalp and a punctured wound in the front of the neck. The injured man was removed to the Hospital. Abernethy resides at 25 Gamma street, Roslyn. A retired civil servant named Harry Boorman. Bainbridge, 65 years of age, was found dead :n bis bed at Wellington. When the discovery was made the light was still on, and a book and the deceased’s glasses were lying beside him. He had been receiving medical attention for some time. The dead body of a man which was seen floating in Wellington Harbour off Pipitea Point on the 28th has been identified as that of Charles Rush, who has been missing from his home since January 23.
