r u ki uk. uu u ■■ i unukui AUCKLAND, January 18. John Elder ton, who was found' guilty of loitering in Symonds street for the purpose of making bets, was fined £75. The police described him as a half-way man, making neither -very big, nor very small, bets. NEW PLYMOUTH, January 18. An unusual incident, and one about which there - were some menacing features, took place in the main street here last night, as a result of which Anthony Kelly appeared in court this morning to answer a series of charges arising out of the occurrence. The charges were: 1. Assaulting a constable by presenting an unloaded revolver at him, saying, “I’ll fix you.” 2. Resisting a constable in the execution of his duty. 3. Carrying firearms without a license. 4. Having in his possession an unregistered revolver. 5. Presenting an unloaded revolver at a constable. The magistrate sent Kelly to gaol for one month, and inflicted fines totalling £l2 •» WELLINGTON. January 18. Gus Nelson, a waterside worker, was sentenced to two terms of imprisonment, totalling two months, by Mr Page, S.M., on charges of stealing a bottle of whisky and a quantity of soap from the steamer Otarama. The magistrate said that, although there might be distressing circumstances he could not grant probation or inflict a line. Waterside workers had had ample warning.
