A SCRAP OF PAPER FROM BAUPAUME BATTLEFIELD.

Mr John L. Potter, a well-known Timaru resident, recently received from his son William, of Lower Ilutt, Wellington, a letter in which he asks if he recalls, when visiting this son in Wellington, sleeping in the same room -as a young named Sihelleter. This young man went to the war, and when at Baupaume, where Harold (Mr Potter senior’s grandson) was killed, picked up a piece of paper. To his surprise he found in it a photo of Mr and Mrs Potter, senior. He cut out the photo, brought it back, and the son forwarded it with the letter to his father. The photo was taken on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee celebration of Mr and Mrs Potter, on April 22 1918, and was published in the Auckland Weekly News with the following particulars:—“Diamond Wedding in Timaru. —Mr’ and Mrs Potter were married at Ballarat in 1858, and came to New Zealand in 1862. Mr Potter was foreman in the laying of the foundation stone of (he Christchurch Cathedral, and moved to Timaru just after the big fire of 1868, where he* assisted m making the first breakwater. Later, he was engaged a.s supervisor in the construction of several important municipal works. Mr Potter is 84 years of age, and his wife about three years younger. They have three sons and three daughters, and eleven grand-children and one great-grand-son.” Harold, mentioned in the letter as killed in the war, was one of the grandsons of Mr and Mrs Potter, both of whom are alive and well. Needless to say this “Scrap of paper” from the French battlefield will be treasured by the family.
