SOUTHLAND MARKETS. (Thom Ocjr Own Correspondents.) IXVERCAGRILL, July 9. Oats.—During- the pa3t week hardly any offerings have been made by growers, and these do not seem disposed to take the somewhat lower rates which are now offering, on an average 2s 7d a bushel, on trucks, for A grade Gartons. Business with northern merchants is decidedly slacker, and the recent small lots for early shipment are apparently for immediate consumption. There is no air of speculation existing. Chaff.—Several lines have been offered by growers during the week, and have changed hands at £3 153, on trucks, at handy sidings, for good quality. Latterly a good deal of chaff coming to hand has been of an inferior quality, requiring it to be sold through the auction rooms, and the low prices obtained have somewhat depressed values. Ryegrass.-—Buyers generally are not so much disposed to operate as they have been during the past few weeks, hut, nevertheless, several lots offered during the day have changed hands at 3s, and even 3s 4d. per bushel, on trucks, for nice lines of 241 b and 251 b seed. Merchants in most cases have now secured sufficient for demands, and they are not inclined to trade, and anything purchased now from growers is more or less of a speculative nature. OAMARU MARKETS. (Fbom Oub Own Cor.respondent.) OAMARU, July 9. The grain and produce market is still marked by dreary dulness. Some wheat continues to come forward in small lines, but the week’s transactions included one fairly substantial mixed line, consisting of 409 sacks of College Hunters and 200 sacks of Tuscan. There is very little business passing in cats, and an easier feeling pervades the market. During Ihe week several sales were made of milling Gartens at 3s net, delivered in Oamaru, but for one very heavy lino of A grade 3s Id net was given at a country siding. There is still no business to record in either Chevalier or Cape barley. The only transaction reported in seeds was tire purchase of a small parcel of cowgrass at 9Jd net, delivered in Oamaru. .Potatoes are at a standstill, with an easier market, and no indications of an early improvement. Stock. —During the past week the stock market has improved considerably in breeding ewes, also in store wethers. There is a noticeable drop in tlio price of store lambs, and now the freezing works are closed here, we have very little prospect of getting away any more lambs this season. The price of wool does not warrant grazers paying big prices for lambs, consequently in store sheep this class has got to suffer most. Dairycattle have also been in demand, and store cattle remain practically unchanged. Tho following prices may be quoted: Store Sheep.—Four and six-tooth breeding owes, 22s to 255; two-tooth ewes, from 21s to 23a 8d; s.m. ewes, from 18s to £1; full and failing, from 12s io 15s; four and sixtooth wethers, in forward condition, from 20s to 21s Gd; two-toc-ih wethers, from 17s 6d to 19s; m.s. lambs, from 103 Gd to 12s; unfinished sorts, down to 6s. Fat Sheep.—Extra prime wethers, from 25s to 265; average prime, from 23s to 24s Gd; unfinished, down to £1; extra prime ewes, from 14s to 16s; average prime, from 12s to 13s Gd; unfinished, down to 93. Store Cattle. —Forward three and four-year-old bullocks, from £S 10s to £9 10s; extra good, £lO 10s; two and two and a-half-year-old steers, from £6 10s to £7 10s; 18 months, from £2 15s to £3 10s. Dairy Cows. —Extra good sorts factory caivers, from, £l2 to £l4 10s; average, from £9 10s to £lO 10s; springing heifers, and heifers in calf due for the factory, from £8 to £lO for extra good salts; average, from £0 10s to £7 10s. Fat Cattle.—Extra prime bullocks, from £l6 10s to £l7 10s; prime, from £l3 to £l4 10s; unfinished, down to £11; extra prime cows, fr.-m £8 to £10; extra prime heifers, { from £lO to £l2; unfinished, down to £B. OAMARU MARKETS. The stock-market has undergone a favour-, able change There is a fair inquiry for young breeding ewes, good four-tooth ewes in lamb being- chiefly in request. But that class of sheep are not procurable. A line of twotooth ewes in lamb found a ready buyer, hut old ewes are not in favour, and a line of failing-mouthed ewes in lamb wa.s disposed of at 8s 6d. No sales of store sheep cr lambs has taken place. A line of fat wethers of medium weight changed hands at 225, and go-od fat ewes were sold at 15s. There is some, inquiry from both north and south for cattle, but prospective buyers are offering prices bele-.v- owners’ willingness to accept, and -business is restricted, in store cattlo 111 particular. A line of bullocks from 31 to four-year-old found a buyer at £8 10s, and a good line of two-year-old steers commanded £6, but other sales made were at low figures, two-year-old steers going at from £2 to £2 10s, and. mixed-sex yearlings at 20s. A line of 40 medium-weight fat bullocks changed hands at £l6, and light-weight-fat bullocks were sold at £ll 15s in a line. The greatest degree of animation in the market lias been seen in respect to dairy stock, which is in request both north and south. Buyers from Southland have been in the market as active- buyers, and have carried off a fair number. The range of prices have been as follows:—Cows, close to profit, from £lO to £l3, with from £l4 to £ls for cows showing quality; cows, to calve in September and October, from £6 to £9; good three-year-old heifers, due for profit in the spring, from £8 to £lO, with up to £l3 for good quality; other heifers, to calve in the spring, from £4 10s to £5 10s. HORSE SALE. The Otago Farmers’ Co-operative Association of New Zealand reports having held a most successful sale of horses, implements, and harness at its horse bazaar, Crawford street, on Friday, Bth inst. There was an entry of over 80 horses, besides a very large quantity of harness and implements. On account of a number of horses being idle in Dunedin tho market wa3 expected to be easier, but vendors were agreeably surprised to find that all good horses met with keen competition, principally from country buyers and the result was a most successful e-ale. The following are some of the prices:—On account of Messrs Aubrey Bros. (Omaranra), black gelding, Gyrs, £47; bay gelding, 6yrs, £44 10s; chestnut gelding, 4yrs, £43. On account of • Ml- Adam Harris (Green Island), bay gelding, 031: , £52. On account of Johnstone and Robertson, bay gelding, Gyrs, £4B. After deducting commission and charges tins leaves a net a verage price of 24s lid per case to be remitted to the grower. The net overprice, on wharf, Hobart, after deducting overseas freight, insurance, and Hobart shipping charge, works out at IGs 21d a case, individual growers’ consignments averaged as high as 80s gross, equal to 18s 7d per case net on Hobart wharf. The banking position has been completely disclosed in the returns of five of the six banks of the dominion. Comparing them with the quarter ended June 30, 1920, they show that the Government deposits for June, (921, are £8,188,534, all with the Bank of New Zealand, practically the same as at June 30 last year, when they were shown as £8,379,164. Free deposits this quarter total £29,264 G3O, a, reduction of £9,089,552 on the free deposit of current account returns at June 30 last year, and of £1,520,572 on the -same account for March 31 last. Fixed deposits for last quarter show a trifling increase, being given at £16,246,471, almost identically the earn© as at Time 30, 19*20, when, they were £16,243,910. The effects of the recent increase in fixed deposit rates by \ per cent, have not yet had time to make much difference in this return. Taking fixed and free deposits together, the following comparisons are obtainable: —Combined deposits at June, 1920, £54,598,092; at June, 2921, £45,511,101 — a contraction at June, 2921, of £9,085,991. The combined deposits on March 31 of this year were £47,155,720. There has been a shrinkage, mainly in the amount at current account, of £1,650,000 in two months, while fixed deposits are about the same now 7 a.s they were at the end of March last. As was fully expected, advances show a substantial increase at the end of the June quarter of 1921, when side by side with those for o corresponding quarter of 1920 compare as follow: —Including discounts in either case, advances at June, 1920, were £34.789,581; at June, 1921, £54,385,483. Increased advances, £19,595,902. Comparing deposits with advances and discounts, the following result is obtained:—June deposits, £45.511,101; advances, £54,385,483; excess advances, £8,744,382.
