Ine ordinary meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was heal on the stli inst.; present—Sir George, Fenwick (president, in the chair), Mrs I orteous, lVliss Porteous, the Revs. W. Saunders and M. Diamond, Messrs A. Kil. Patrick, W. F. Sligo, J. Shepherd, and S. P. Leith. Tlie Secretary reported that, in accordance with the instructions oi the committee, he had forwarded an associate certilieate to Aliss Cathie Pennell, of WaitaJi ina Guily Sciiooi, for an act of kindness shown to an animal. He was also writing to the Head Aianters’ Association stating that tlie society would be pleased similarly to reward other acts oi kindness that were reported to rt. Respecting tlie propaganda work which it is proposed to carry out in the schools, Air H. C. Jones (secretary of the Head •Masters’ Association) wrote stating that his association was heartily in sympathy with ihe, work of tho society. The offer ‘of the society to present prizes for essays relating to the prevention of cruelty to animals was considered, but- the meeting was of opinion that this object would be better served if the society presented to schools framed pictures an-d literature relating to the subject. -—After some discussion ii was decided to write to Aliss 'White, of AVollingt on, _ to ask her what progress was being made by the Junior League which she and Aii-s Orr (another school teacher) had been instrumental in forming ■some six months, ago, with a view to ascertaining- the possibility of doing something of a similar nature in Otago. The Canterbury Society wrote forwarding for consideration a number of proposed amendments to the Police Offences Act, enlarging the scope of those sections of the Act which deal with the prevention of cruelty to animals. Among the suggestions made were a number cf proposed amendments for ihe treatment of stock on the farm, ,while travelling, and at the abattoirs; and il was further proposed that steps should be taken by legal enactment to abolish live-pigeon shooting matches and the coursing of harc-s.—Ala-ny of the suggestions were favourably viewed by the meeting-, and Mr Siigu pointed out that the Otago Society had already obtained the an melioration of cruelly in a number cf directions. lor instance, owing to tJie manner in which they had set their faces against live-pigeon shooting matches many men who formerly patronised this so-called form of sport were now ashamed to do so. —lt was decided to i ter tin* proposed amendments to a committee, consisting of the chairman, .Messrs Snowball, Sligo, and Diamond, to consider and report to a special meeting.
