A TALL YARN

MR HUGHES INDIGNANT. LONDON, July 8. The day after Mr Hughes at the conference had complained of the inadequate and misleading news regarding Australia, a cable from Sydney said that wild dogs from the centre were steadily creeping over New South Wales, and that the farmers were retiring before the menace. Mr Hughes says: It is lamentable to find such gross and mischievous misrepresentation. It is brad to express one’s indignation at such venomous attempts to belittle and injure our great and rich country. I can only look to public opinion in Australia to deal with this kind of cable. The recrudescence of the wild dog myth comes at a moment when I hold an official message from Australia about the remarkably favourable position. Nothing could be more contradictory than this information from the Government and the stoiy of desolation, cabled from Sydney. This kind of news, served up in England and to the world, will affect our credit and will be destructive to the price of our commodities. Mr Hughes lias directed the attention of the proprietors of the London newspapers to the misleading statement.
