WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council, held in the Council Chambers on Friday, was attended by Crs J. hi‘Gill (chairman), C. F. Overton, G. H. Gilmore, E. Laley, C. A. M‘Lachlan, and P. Briscoe. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The inspector’s report on the works attended to during the month was adopted, and his report on the North-East Valley was approved, and the residents of Pigeon Flat thanked for the work they had carried out, the surfaceman to finish the work as soon as possible. TUMAI RAILWAY CROSSING. The Signal and Electrical Engineer (Chief Engineer’s Office, Wellington) wrote in reply to the council’s letter concerning the constant ringing of tho danger signal bellj at the Tumai railway crossing, and that body’s suggestion lhat they would be in a better position if placed about 60 yards along the road, to enable anyone approaching tho crossing to hear the bells in time to apply brakes. Ho stated lhat it was the policy of tho Railway Department to keep all bells and apparatus on railway land. Tho automatic warning bells at level crossings were provided for all classes of traffic, and therefore gave better warning to slow moving traffic and pedestrians when close to the crossing.
