HAMILTON, June 21. At the Supreme Court sitting, which opened to-day, Martin Joyce and John William M‘( 'orkindale pleaded guilty to a charge of breaking into a butcher’s shop and stealing meat. Joyce was placed on probation for two years and M'Corkindaio was sentenced to three years’ reformative treatment. GISBORNE, June 23. In the case against John Harold Kane, solicitor, for the alleged forgery of a receipt by suggested alteration from £IOO to £2OO, the jury was out for four hours, and at the end of that time announced that it could not agree, and a new trial was ordered to take p'ace in August. A Maori youth, Tetoira Fox, pleaded guilty to indecent assault on two little girls at Teararoa and was ordered a whipping and sent to an industrial school. Joe Te Whiu was sentenced to two years’ reformative treatment for theft and false pretences at Teararoa. Edward Dudley Nicholson got probation for two years for the theft, of motor accessories at Whakatane. For a similar offence Duncan Angus M’Lean was sentenced to reformative treatment for two years. For the theft of a watch and chain at Ruatorea, Patrick Ryan was sentenced to 12 months. Severe comment on the principle of granting probation io Maori youths was made by Mr Justice Reed to-day. The principle on this coast lie had been informed had broken down. Maori youths to whom probation had been granted did not go back to their kiangas in disgrace but as heroes.
