“The country is glutted with woollen goods from England,” said a business man connected with the trade at Oamaru recently (states the Oamaru Mail). ‘‘Possibly never have the bonded stores held such quantities of woollen goods as they do to-day, yet the anomaly exists that the New Zealand woollen manufacturing mills are able to work full time and give an excellent return. Perhaps this shows that the war has taught the public to realise that New Zealand’s woollen manufactures are as good as anything made in the world.” Several ladies in the New Zealand telephone exchanges are on the eve of completing 30 years of service, dating from the institution of the system, and when that period has expired will be entitled to retire on superannuation. Dr Henderson, Government geologist, reckons close on 10.000.000 tons of coal can be got from the seams in Reefton district including the following;—Between Madman and Painkiller Creeks, No 4 scam, 80 acres, 2.400,000 tons. Between Reefton and Ajax Creek, No. 4 seam, 45 acres. 1.350.000 tons. Between Reefton and Ajax Creek. No. 2 seam, 47 acres, 1.092.750 tons. Between Ajax and Burke Creeks, No. 4 seam, 30 acres, 1.025,000 tons.
