Licenses will be issued bv the postmaster, Temuka, on the recommendation of the society’s secretary, Mr B. Hughes, and the number to be issued is limited to 20. A holder of a license is not permitted to take or kill more than three bucks; neither may he have a dog with him, nor take or kill a doe or fawn. A sporting challenge chopping match took place at Whangarei on Monday botween Maurice Griffin (Maungakaramea) and James Croft (Whakapara) for £6O a■ide, on a 15in underhand block. AQUATICS. CHRISTCHURCH REGATTA. CHRISTCHURCH, February 26. The Christchurch regatta was held to-day on Lake Forsyth. Competition was Confined to local crews, with the exception of two crews from the Port Chalmers Club. Port Chalmers won the Maiden Fours, Avon being second and Canterbury third. Port Chalmers also won the Junior, Fours, Canterbury being second and Avon third. BILLIARDS. LONDON, February 25. OTAGO v. SOUTHLAND. (Fbom Oub Own Corbespondent.) INVERCARGILL, February 26. The Otago and Southland lawn tennis match was played yesterday under ideal weather conditions. Otago won by a handsome majority, the superiority of the visitors being clearly shown in ail departments of the game, but more particularly in close net play and m the excellence of their combined work. The Otago players were better able to last the more strenuous games, and when any match went to ' hree sets they, with one exception, won the final set easily. The Otago ladies proved to be more enterprising than the local players, and _ won many aces by good net play, this assisting them greatly in the Doubles. Only one Men’s Single went to Southland, although both Wilkie and Duthie had to play three sets before winning. The tennis throughout was of a very high order, and the display was perhaps the best Otago has given on the local courts. ATHLETICS. TAHAKOPA SPORTS. The annual sports meeting conducted by the Taliakopa Caledonian Society took place on Thursday. Though the weather conditions were not of the best, the rein cleared off about midday, and the afternoon remained fine. The principal events were the big sawing and chopping competitions. A large number" of mills are at work in the Tahakopo Valley, and competitors came from as far as Tokontii, 40 miles away, to take part. Twelve pairs competed in the Sawing Handicap (17:n log), while there were alsc 12 entries for the Handicap Chop (18in logs), won by J. M’Ara, and 17 entries in the Standing Block Chop (12in logs), won by R. Wybrow. The Champion Sawing (17in logs] was won by Phillips and Jacobson, out oj six competitors; and the Maiden Chop (12ii: legs) by E. Norman, out of 17 competitors in 48sec.
