PALMERSTON SHOW

FINE EXHIBIT OF SHEER. The Palmerston Show was held on Friday in good weather. The entries were in excess ot past year-, ihe me: ease being noticeable particularly in the case of sheep, which were forward in such numbers and quality as to bring the display into the front rank of country shows. The horses were also a line lot, and the draught section won the favourable notice not only of judges, but of the public generally, and gave the officials the keenest satisfaction. Altogether the whole venture was an unqualified success, the attendance also being large, between £SO and £oO being taken at the gate. Many competent to pass an opinion declare the show the best the society has had in the 40 years of its existence; i o one disputes that it was quite equal to ihe best, and one of the judges remarked that it was well worth, coming io see for the horses alone . The cattle exhibit was the only one that might have been expected to bo better, but with the North (Itago Show so recently' over and the Dunedin. Show so near, it is not surprising that dairymen should be reluctant to get their animals up again into show condition and face ail the inconvenience a show puts upon them. The shorthorn class, however, was a particularly good one; more Ayrshire would have improved matters, and the Jerseys and eros-breds might have been considerably more- numerous. Mr J. Lament, of Sawyers Bay, secured the champion ribbons for both the Ayrshire bull and cow. The Best dairy cow was adjudged to be a Jersey entered by Mr J. .Davie. The Bu-sliey Park Estate secured first award for a pair of dairy cows. Mr J. Stevenson, of Mount Royal, secured a number of awards for Polled Angus cattle. In sheep there was keen competition in the merino classes between Messrs D. Ross and G. Ross. The bushey Park Estate, Mr Jaa. Chapman, and Messrs D. Ross and D. J. Ross contested the Corrietiale sec-

tion, and Messrs P. J. Callaghan, Chi#5,, m . IL'os-. A. S. Cambridge, and A. i'lennng the Border Leicester classes, all being rewarded with various prizes. Bushey Park Estate and Mr D. Ross shared the a "7} rtis ' n the Romney Marsh classes. Ine most taking lot. among the draught horses was the gelding class, which the judge (Mr Tisdall) considered as good a | ri n g as ho has ever seen in the dominion. From the mere spectator’s point of viow, interest centred mainly in the hack classoa m the light horse section, these being large and of good < 11-round quality. A new feature was added to the show this year in the presence of a poultry section. The quality from the competitive standpoint might have been better, but the exhibit as a whole was made attractive by the presence) of many utility exhibits from the State Poultry Farm at Milton.
