CONDITIONS IN AUSTRIA
VIENNA, January 12. The Austrian Government has exhausted its funds and has determined to resign on January 15 and hand over its power to the Reparations Commission, in the hope that the Allies will thus be forced to provide Austria with essential financial support. An inquiry into the cost of living nas been opened. The Chancellor (Dr Karl Renner) stated that a Bill was being introduced into the National Council providing for 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of 5,000,000 crowns for profiteers. He declared that great masses of the people were working their hardest hut were unable to earn sufficient to procure the barest necessaries. The only remedy was to stabilise the exchange. Increased production would mean ample foreign credits. The Labour delegates demanded corporal, and even capital, punishment for profiteers.
