A Levin gardener cleared £IOO off an acre of land with new potatoes this season. His return would have been higher bad he not dug* early, on account of the blight sea re. David Withan, posing as a veterinary surgeon for the Taieri Farmers’ Veterinary Union, and obtaining goods from the D.I.C. after being “bowled out” by the police, pleaded guilty at the Dunedin Police Court to the charges and was remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence. On a further charge of a like nature accused was remanded to appear at Wellington on Friday next. Chief-detective Bishop prosecuted for the police.
A fireman on the coastal steamer Huia was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment., with hard labour, for the theft of gin, part of the vessel’s cargo, during a voyage to Wanganui. The cook became intoxicated on Christmas Eve, and it, was ascertained that the liquor had been supplied by accused. The magistrate declared that it was a dear case of cargo broaching.
