BROAD BAY REGATTA

MOST SUCCESSFUL TO DATE. IDEAL, WEATHER AND RECORD CROWDS. The annual New Year’s Day regatta at Broad Bay on Saturday proved an unqualified success; indeed, it was admitted on all hands to he the most successful regatta ever held there. For this the glorious holiday weather, admirably suited as it was to tl.e exacting requirements of the programme planned, was largely responsible. The crowd that gathered, for the occasion is considered to be the largest that has ever visited Broad Bay. Each of the big ferry boats made three down trips loaded to their utmost capacity with passengers from Dunedin, the boat reaching Dread Day at 3 p.m. being just as densely packed as any that preceded it. In addition, the Tarewai and scores of lesser craft were busy adding their quota to the crowd, and when the visitors by cycle and motor and people already living in the vicinity are taken into consideration it will be seen that a crowd of fully 5000 witnessed the regatta. The following are the results, the times given in each case being the corrected times: FIRST-CLASS YACHT RACE, six times round. Six entries.—Waimana (H. Watson), 2hrs -21 min 7see .Imin handicap), 1; Myro (F. Wilson and Co.), iilirv 23min ICsec (4min la H. Can j and Co.), 2hrs 25n s< ratcli), 3. Also started: Miti !.J. Drown) "min, Annis (A. This smart little cra.it, however, has a turn of speed nearly | double that of anything else afloat in the harbour, and very soon left the rest of the competitors standing. The skipper went astray in his course however, and thou ah he endevoured to rectify the mistake later by ! returning and rounding a buoy, he was disqualified. He finished in 46mra ISsec. After t.!.e Viper 11, the Norana was the first to come in. followed by the Laura and Ralaco' MOTOR BOAT RACE, over 4 h.p. and under S h.p. Once round. Eleven entries. Leader (F.
