NEW ZEALAND'S LOYALTY

BRITISH MANUFACTURERS' OPINION.

OTAGO WITNESS PRAISED.

The following letter from a manufacturer in Leeds has been received by a Dunedin woollen merchant who frequently posts abroad many copies of the Otago Witness. The better Ltates:

‘Please accept our sincere thanks for the copy of the Otago Witness 'received, and the intensely interesting account it gives of the visit of the Prince of Wales to your country. To anyone like ourselves, living in this country, we cannot realise the unanimous acclaim of loyalty as shown by the whole, of Australia and New Zealand. Surely nothing approaches to it in this island of ours, and we can only conclude that so many occasions are offered us of seeing Royalty that our enthusiasm is tempered by our frequent' opportunities of expressing it; whereas your opportunities are so seldom that they mark an epoch in your country’s history. Still we rejoice that the loyalty of our colonies is no passing fancy, but confirmatory of what has been done by them in the late war to uphold the best traditions of the English-speaking race, and to demonstrate before the world that neither distance nor condition can alienate or break the ties of the Motherland. God grant that this bond of love and loyalty will ever exist where a Britisher breathes, and that with time it will be consolidated and made evfen more secure, and that its influence will permeate every nation and people on earth, and so realise the teachings of Him who brought with Him that wonderful message: ‘Peace on earth, goodwill towards men.’ As to_ the paper itself, we must express our surprise _ that you have such an up-to-date publication, even admitting it is an exceptional issue for it seems to meet every ordinary human - requirement—business, sport, domestic economy, agriculture, horticulture, finance, science and art, and general news from all parts of the world—are dealt with fully and comprehensively; and there is one feature of the issue of enormous import, and thafc ie the letters from and to the younger generation. Surely no country can fail to succeed where such enis so generously offered to mould the minds of the young and stimulate them in all that is worthy to live for. To lift up the morale of a nation or country can only be accomplished by stimulating the minds of the children to noble endeavour, and in this newspaper you have one of the secrets of a prosperous New Zealand."
