RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

DUNEDIN SPRING MEETING. Fiest Day—Friday, Ociobbe 15.

The Dunedin Jockey Club had the good fortune to open the local racing season under the very favourable circumstances of good weather and an attractive card. The attendance, however, was not so large as what might have been expected, although it was fairly large for a non-holiday. The track was- firm and fast, and a track record was achieved over the principal six-furlong event. The. racing was fairly interesting without being particularly exciting in the way of finishes. There was an atmosphere of suspicion over some of the running, but as it apparently escaped without challenge, the form for the day, although unsatisfactory, might be accounted for by horses shaping as they sometimes do first time out at spring meetings. A pleasing, feature of the day was supplied by the field which turned out for the M'Lean Stakes, as it will naturally encourage the club to cater on progressive lines for classic events. The youngsters ,were a well-behaved lot in the M'Lean Stakes, with the exception of Liqueur, who declined to line up to the barrier. Mr Wood kept the' others waiting a bit too long and might have upset the whole lot. They were finally sent away without Liqueur from a good line, from which Meteorite, Song Bird and Humboldt were smartest to move. Meteorite led into the straight, and going on lengths from Humboldt, who beat Song Bird a neck whilst Limelight, who was second last after going a furlong,. finished on well and nearly beat Song Bird for third place' The winner was bred by his owner, Mr J F. Buchanan, and got by Martian from the imported mare Forked Lightning; by Eager—La Fo'urohette, by ForagerDolly Agnes, by Castlereagh-Fair Agnes, by Voltiguer—Little Agnes, by The CureMiss Agnes, by Birdcatcher. Song ran a bit wide at the turn, and lost ground, but Limelight ran the best race apart from handled £26 2*4 10. for the day, as compared with £2l 451 for the first day of the spring meeting last year. The following are the results:—.
