By Digger. The Whangarei Racing Club had a good attendance on the opening clay of the annual meeting, which was held on the Avondale course this year. Unfortunately, rain commenced after the fifth race, which made matters very unpleasant for,the crowd getting home.. The totalisator figures reached the good total of £39,729, whioh represented an increase of £29,561 on the first day last year, when the meeting' was held at Whangarei, Woody Glen had an easy victory in the Whangarei Cup, finishing up -his: task in good style. He stays on well, and should be seen to advantage in much better company. Marble Slab, the runner-up to Woody Glen, ran a good race in, the Oup, being in
front most of the way. The half-brother to Bedford should pay his way this season. Alteration carried 51b overweight in the Cup to secure the services of H. Gray, but failed to run prominently. "Windorah was given his firs!; run this season in the Whangarei Cup. The race should improve him. Stook scored his first victory in the Maiden. Though not a good one, he should be useful among the hacks. Khublai Khan, who filled third position, had been-showing good form on the track. The race should do him good. Smoke Concert was a very warm order in the two-year-old race, but failed to leave the mark. She showed a lot of pace over the concluding stages, but was giving the leaders too much start. Arch Laddie, a full brother to Arch Lassie, hopped out smartly in the two-year-old race, and was never headed. Loyal Irish, the runner-up, was never headed.
Yankee Doodle, who was making his first appearance over the big fences, won the Steeplechase in good style. . First Call was a good favourite, but made a very poor showing. Scottish Knight won the hurdle race fairlyeasily, and should be useful over the small slicks. Middlemark, who hails from the same stable, fell and broke one of his hind legs, and had to bo destroyed. The High AVeight Handicap provided a good finish between Some .Fashion and North Loburn, the judge declaring in favour of Some Fashion by a nose
