BALCLUTHA.

August 21. —This winter Balclutha has endeavoured to satisfy _ all demands for the increased social life "which is so much in evidence at the present day. Energetic committees and private individuals never tire of arranging dances, social evenings, card parties., and concerts. Some of these are organised for the benefit of some worthy object, and others lor the love of pleasure and social intercourse. Last week the Dunedin Commercial Travellers' Choir, under the directorship of Mr S. Gilchrist, gave a most successful concert in aid of the funds of the Balclutha Brass Band. The items were all' well rendered, and as this is the first time a choir wholly composed of male voices has visited Balclutha the rendition was a thorough change for the audience. Mr Miller Hope officiated at the piano. •&■ dance was held at the conclusion of the concert, and was well patronised'. Literary Societies.—The Men's Social Club and Ladies' Literary Society,.* started some little time ago, continue to flourish. These were organised with a view to the moral and educational improvement of the members. Young and old alike take an interest in the clubs, and some very interesting studies and debates are given. They are two separate bodies. The Ladies', Club hais a membership of 67, and the Men's Club a membership of somewhere about 30.

Returned* Soldiers' Association.—The Returned Soldiers' Association has arranged with Mr W. B'. M'Ewan (librarian of the Dunedin Carnegie Library) for a lecture on Scotland on August 26. The proceeds l go in aid- of the local returned soldiers' library fund.
