WAREPA.

Aaigust 19. —After having 1 experienced a, mild winter, we have had some real winter weather this month, and the grass has not made any progress lately} but turnips are holding out well, and stock in general are in good condition. The Farm.—A few lambs are to be seen on some farms; but lambing will not be geneval here until next month. Autumn-sown crops are looking well this year. I have heard of some having made too much growth, and they will require to bo fed off with sheep— a very unusual occurrence in this district.

Week of Pity.—A publio meeting was called to. arrange about collecting in, this district for the starving millions in Europe. There was a poor attendance; but tho out' come of it will be that someorae will take up the collecting,, and I am sure there will be a good donation sent in from this district. Church Affairs. —'After the Rev, A. Watson

accepted * 'call to ift.o 'Weston distriot, the charge was. filled temporarily for a. few years; but wo have had a settled minister (Rev. W. R. Hume) for over a year now, and ha is doing good work. The ladies of the district have formed a P.W.M.TJ. Society, and will hold a. sale of work: shortly. The church committee' has been the means of placing a new organ in the church, and it was played for the first time- on Sunday, August 8. The Rev. A. H. Dow, of Waiwera, conducted the services, and Mr Storey, of Dunedin, officiated at the organ. On the following evening a social was held in the church, when the Rev. W. B. Hume presided. Speeches were given by the Rev. Messrs Dow and Mason* -Solos were rendered by Mr Edwards and Misses Taggarfc and Hogg, duets by Misses Iris and Margaret Murray, and a recitation by Mr Sutherland. After tea had been handed round and the usual votes of thanks given, the meeting closed with a verse of .' the National Anthem.

Hockey.—The young ladies of the district are very enthusiastic over this game. On every Saturday they put in- a' good practice. They have played three matches this year, but did not score a win. In the last match with Stirling, on. the Warepa ground, they put up a strong fight. The local club entertained the visitors at afternoon tea.
