WELLINGTON NOTES.

(Feom Ooh Own Correspondent.)

August 19. The local horses that competed at Riccarton axe back in their old quarters: at Trentham.

E. Browne, for some time with J. Ayresat Trentham, has set out on his own" account. He has Spangle and Matty to start with. Mr Bert Taylor, owner of the two Martian mares, is residing in Sydney, where he was married a few months ago. It is not improbable that during the forthcoming season there will not be any stake on the Wellington programme of less than 300sovs. Your correspondent understands that Messrs Biddiford Bros, recognised the services of Harry Cutts, who had charge of Coalition for about three months prior to the Grand National meeting, in a tangible manner.

A deputation from racing- and trotting clubs, which waited on the Prime Minister this morning with reference to the payment of income tax since 1916, got a. better hearing than generally expected. The Auckland and Manawatu Clubs had already paid what was due. Half a dozen members of J. T. Jamieson's team were engaged at Marton, but it is unlikely they will compete thereat. The Opaki trainer left for Auckland last night with Rose Wreath, Strategy, Rieuse, Affectation, and a couple of maidens. One is a two year-old gelding by Absurd — Lysistrata, • claiming an engagement in the Avondale Stakes, and the other a three-year-old gelding by Prudent King—Lady Limosel. Kildee did not accompany her stable-mates.

H. Telford is going to_ Marton with Flight Commander and Militaire. L. Morris will again ride for the local stable this season. C. Pritchard is taking up Matatua and Miss Elva. The local trainer has received word that 0, Emerson will ride both horses. Mr W- R. Kemball has been appointed chairman of tho Course Committee of the Opaki Club. The tracks there" are evidently not too good, as early in the week Mr Kemball sent 12 of his team to Wanganui. Royal Exchange is the only member of J. Lowe*s team engaged at Marton.
