In ladies' hockey Southland • defeated Canterbury by "4 goals to 2. OTAGO v. SOUTHLAND. The interprovincial match between Otago and Southland was played at Invercargill on Wednesday on a somewhat greasy and slippery ground. Thero was a large attendance, and the crowd could with difficulty be kept from encroaching on the line at exciting moments. The match was an extremely fast 'and interesting one from start to finish, and provided an attractive exhibition of the game. Southland attacked from tho bully, and a fast rush by Henderson and Hamilton was stopped by Peters, who returned play to the Otago forwards. Mitchell picked up, and passing between Mitchell, Turbutt, and-Ireland carried the ball right into the circle, but Hinton saved. Frorn the twenty-five Henderson and Reid beat the opposition, and Reid found the net, but Southland had been pulled up for 6ticks. Hewit put Otago on the attack, and Turbutt, Ireland, and Calder were prominent in an invasion of the circle, Ireland scoring first blood. Southland rallied, and several fast combined rushes, well supported by Richards, were dofoated only by sound defence by Finlay and Peters. Southland came again, Smith centring, and a likely shot was saved bv Hay ward conceding a corner. The sp<?ll ended with the ( score—Otago 1, Southland till. On resuming, Foote replaced Rradshaw, who retired hurt. Fast play marked tho opening stages of the spell, the ball racing from end to end of the field. Foote took the ball down the wing and centred ; Hewit cut in and netted a hot goal from the edge of tho circle. Maroons now livened ■up and for 15 minutes gave Otago some thrilling moments. Henderson, Reid, and Smith were prominent in attack and Reid shot. Hayward cleared, but before he could recover Smith landed a beauty in the net. Southland came again, and a centre from Hamilton was picked up by Smith, who passed to Henderson, who made no error with tlio shot. Two all. Southland at this stage looked like winning, but Otago's form and training began to tell. Calder, Ireland, and' Turbutt were several times within an ace of scoring. Twice Calder ran through and just lost possession in the circle. Southland relieved, but Foote returned play to Mitchell, the ball travelling on to Turbutt and on to Calder, who found the net close in. Directly after, Turbutt came through alone and a stinging shot hit tho crossbar and Hinton saved. Otago were now in their stride, and a pass from Carter let the forwards away together, Mitchell closing in from tho wing and scoring the final goal. Considering that the Southland team had not previously played together this year, they put up a fine performance, and Otago asserted their superiority only in the final stages. Otago 4, Southland 2. A return match will be played at Dunedin in September.
