OTAUTAU.

March 5. —A meeting of the Otautau branoh of the War Funds' Association was held in the board room on Wednesday evening. Corporate F. J. Paton, C. W. RobertBon, and Rifleman F. W. Cole forwarded letters of appreciation for medals received. The treasurer reported that the branch held £65 14s 5d for the Soldiers' Memorial Fund and that this would require to be handed over to the Soldiers' Memorial Committee or Board as custodians. After payment, of this, the branch's credit balance was £93 Bs, and it was decided to retain this for another year in order to meet tha urgent demands for relief of soldiers. The sum of £5 was voted to a soldier who had had his effects destroyed by fire. It was also ieporte-d that the Social Committee hod a credit balance of £l4 14s sd, with the net proceeds of the last welcome-home still to come in. Accounts amounting to £6O 2s 3d were passed f° r payment. The assets of the branch, in the shape of crockery, are to ibe offered to the Town Board for use in the hall after the value had been assessed. Aeroplane Visit. —Those who had booked Beats for a ride in the flying machine which •was to have been here on Friday last were greatly disappointed when they learned that the visit had to be abandoned owing to the high winds prevailing. Bowling.—The return mitcb Otautau v. Orepuki was played on the local green on Wednesday, 3rd inst., when Otautau again suffered defeat, this'time by the narrow margin of four points, the scores being 68 —54. Miss Dimmook, on $lO eve of her marriage, was entertained at a social in the Town Hall by the members and friends of St. Andrew's Church, of which body she had been a staunch supporter and an ardent worker. The Rev. C. Webb, the vicar, officiated as chairman, and items were rendered by Mrs Webb. Messrs N. G. Saunders, W. Coulter,. and Tressiider, while Miss Hunter gave a pianoforte solo, each one receiving well<leserved recognition. The accompaniments were tastefully played by Mesdames Cupples and Saunders, M'iss Holmes, and Mr Grieve. During an interval, Rev. O. Webb referred appreciatively to the -work the guest had done in connection with the church, especially stressing the fact that, as superintendent of the Sunday School, she had carried •out her duties efficiently and well, and her place would be hard to fill. The members could not let her leave without showing their appreciation in some tangible form, and on their behalf he presented her with a handsome inscribed tea. set, wishing her every happiness and prosperity in her future life." Mills responded on the guest's behalf, the audience joining in singing "For She's a Jollv Good Fellow." The music for the dance Was contributed by Mr Jellyman, Mr R. Collett officiating as M.C. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies. Special mention must be made of Mrs Porteous, who had charge of the musical programme, while Misses Evans and Durham were entrusted with the work of collecting- for the presentation. The Now' Mill.—A start is to be made immediately with the erection of the Southland Timber Company's mill, whioh is to be built so that it can be merged into the big scheme should it eventuate.
