WILD CATTLE
SERIOUS MENACE IN ' MOANA DISTRICT. (Feom Ouh Own Coiieespo*idb\tJ t AUCKLAND, February 22. The wild cattle in the Lake Waikaremo- ; ana district appear to be increasing in numbers, and their ferocity has- become' a menace to travellers. Two or three parties which have been attacked have had' narrow escapes. When travelling 0.1 horseback .along the lake trades a few weeks ago the Rev. George Budd, of Devonport, and his party were charged by a huge black bull in the darkniess. His horns", fortunately, missed the horses, although one man's leg was grazed. The travellers found refuge on a, tree stump about Bft high, and there tihey had to stay from about 8 o'clock to halfpast 10, tho bull in the meantime remaining in -undisputed possession of the track, , and' paying no attention to the horses, 1 which bad gone into the S3rub. > i Finally a party from the accommodation j house, whore the travellers were expected, J rod© up, and tse bull abandoned the siege and made off. •-."•'• ! The next day the party tracked him down 1 for four miles and shot him. He proved l ;' to be the largest animal the sportsmen had 1 seen, the skin being out into two for trail* portation through the bush.
