TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Taieri County Council, held on Fridav, was attended by Crs Blackie (chairman)", A. Scott, W. II L. .Christie, Jas. W. Blair, C. Findlay, F. Doherty, and R. A. Kempshell. The Finance Committee reported the expenditure for the past month at £2302 9s Id, and the receipts £2434 3s. 9d. The bank book showted a debit. balance of £6450 9s Ed. , The Ranger reported having impounded 25 cattle during the month.—Received. The Sanitary Inspector reported having inspected all the slaughter-houses in the county during the month, and found them all in good order. The piggery at Green Island was in splendid condition on each of his two visits during the month. Several complaints had been made about the . dirty state of the Silverstream, especially the 2>art that formed the boundary between the county and the Borough of Mosgiel. During the recent dry spell the stream had got very :ow, and was almost dry in some places. A good 3eal of foreign matter drained into the stream, and, as there was not a sufficient flow of water to carry it away, it became a menace to the health of the large number of children who frequented the stream during the hot weather. As there was so.ne doubt which of the local bodies had control of the stream at this part, he placed the matter before the council for instructions. —After a short discussion it was resolved to receive the report. The Controller-general wrote regarding the Mowhiti-Shannon Telephone Office stating that, as there was a deficiency of £9 9s 10d on the-year's working, no return of subsidy was due to the council. —Noted. The Westport District Citizens' Committee for.v-irded a circular regarding the coal shortage, pointing out that the coal resources <"f that district were sufficient to supply the whole pf New Zealand. The council was a.sked to urge upon its member the desirability of members of Parliament visiting Westport on their way to Samoa.— Received The Public Works Department notified that the sum of £1455 (£1 10s for £1) and £6OO (£l for £1) had been authorised, and plans and specifications approved for the Grpen Island to Taieri Mouth-road. The Town Clerk, Mosgiel, wrote that at a meeting of the Borough Council it was stated that a practice was made of registerring in the county dogs which belonged to residents of the borough, and he asked that the council's registrar be instructed to refuse to register dogs belonging to residents of Mosgiel borough.—The inspector stated - that he followed the section of the Act which provided that an owner may register his dog either at his place of business or at his residence. No borough dogs had been registered in the county as far as lie was. aware. —It was eventually left to the clerk to reply. ." G. M'Master (Saddle Hill) wrote offering on behalf of those concerned to cart metal for Speed's hill at 5s per ton immediately.— Offer accepted, and work to be put in hand. ■-• • ,' . David Leishman (North Taieri) forwarded a report on a coal deposit on his property, and made application for assistance in roadmaking giving access to the place.—Report to be sent to the Mines Department for the Inspector of Mines to report. The Inspector of Noxious Weeds -wrote that unless gorse and broom was removed from several roads the council would he liable to prosecution without further notice. —To be attended to. A. Stewart wrote drawing, the council's attention to the bad state of the road fromPukerangi Railway Station to Barewood Homestead, and asking the council to take steps to have it improved. —To be attended to. ,-■■'.
