RACING IN AUSTRALIA.

VICTOEIA RACING CLUB. First Day—Sa.tuk.day, February 28. The weather was fine and warm, and there was a splendid atendance for the first day of the Victoria Racing Club's autumn meeting. Tullilah pulled up at the first jump in the Pines Hurdles. Angleform had four lengths lead in ihe early stages, but dropped back at the last hurdle, and ran last. Tharnock just won from Coronatus, who was a bad last for eleven furlongs. The St. Leger proved an easy thing for Artilleryman, who led by a long way. Whizbang finished wide, but dead-heated for second place. Artilleryman has now won nearly £16,000. The Newmarket Handicap went to an outsider in Red Dome, who led for the last furlong, and won well from Gambler's Gold. Cetigne was always well up, and ran a good third. The favourite, Chryaolaufi, was seventh. Red Dome was trained by Fred Foulsham, of Caulfield, and owned by a Melbourne boot manufacturer, and ridden by the Newcastle jockey, J. Mahoney. Haud appeared to strike trouble when well inside the distance. Th© first prize in the Newmarket is worth £2527. Red Dome cost JE3SO last season. Gossine Hatan got a run on the rails in the Sires' Produce Stakes, and won well from Early Deader and Glenacre in lmin 29sec. The race was run over seven furlongs for the first time. Gossine Hatan is favourite for the Derby. Cetigne was cheered loudly for his win in the Essendori Stakes. He is now within measurable distance of equalling Carbine's stake record. The Australian Cup candidate finished with great dash, and won the Brunswick Stakes. Results: PINES HURDLES— Tranock,. 9.0, 1; Coronatus, 9.10, 2; Miss Rosslyn, 10.9, 3. Eleven started. Won by a short head, a neck between second and third. Time, 3min 4Siscc. ST. LEGER.—Artilleryman, 8.10 (R. Lewis), 1; Sinbad the Sailor, 8.10, and Whiz Bang, 8.10 (dead heat), 2. The only starters. Artilleryman led for the last nine furlongs, and won by six lengths. Time, 3niin 7sec. NEWMARKET HANDICAP. Red Dome, 7.0 (J. Mahoney) .... 1 Gambler's Gold, 7.8 (G. Meddick) 2 Cetigne, 9.6 (A. Wood) 3 Twenty-eight started. The favourite, Chrysolaus, and Gold Tie were together a length in front of Red Dome and Bandurria at the end of three furlongs. Red Dome, in the middle of the course, finished best, and won by half a length, third horse a neck further away. Gold Tie was fourth and Frais fifth. Time, lmin 14gseo. SIRES' PRODUCE STAKES.—Cossino Hatan (K. Bracken), 8.7, 1; Glenacre, 8.10, 2; Crimson, 8.10, 3. Seven started. Won by a length, two lengths 'hetween second and third. Time, lmin 29seo. ESSENDON . STAKES.—Cetigne, 9.2 (A. Wood), 1; Wee Gun, 9.2, 2; Carriole, 8.13, 3. Also started : Comedian 9.2, Alnwick 8.3. Won by three-quarters of a length, half a length between and third.
