FIRES.
AUCKLAND, August 24. A fire gutted the top floor of the Hall of Commerce last night, practically destroying the stock and fittings of Mr M. J. Sclineideman, who estimates the damage at between £IO.OOO and £12,000. The insurances totalled £4500 in the National Office. The remainder of the building was saved as the result of prompt work by the brigade. CHRISTCHURCH, August 23. An outbreak of fire this morning at Mr Butchers fellmongery near Kaiapoi considerably damaged the building and contents, consisting of wool and felt. Tha premises, which had been taken over by the Government, were insured in the* Queensland Company; for what amounts w r as not ascertainable.
