The monthly meeting was held on the 22nd Cr Christie (chairman) presided. The Financn Committee reported the receipts since the previous report were £529 6s, and the expenditure £1155 19s 7d, The debit balance at the bank was £2589 2s Id. The committee recommended that the residences of the cleric, inspector of works, and quarry manager be connected by telephone. —Adopted. The Sanitary Inspector reported that the slaughter-houses in the county were in a satisfactory state. He had had occasion to complain to a resident at Wingatui with reference to depositing ashes in a ditch on the roadside, but the nuisance had since received attention. The ditch was in need of attention, as it was overgrown with grass and weeds. Nine ' property owners also wrote regarding damage to the same road. —The member for the riding to report at next meeting on the ditch and the road. The Ranger reported that, as an outcome of the floods there were a lot of cattle on the roads, but as owners were keeping a watch on them he had not impounded 2-ny. —Received.

The District Engineer notified that he had approved of plans and specifications for the expenditure of the grant for the Ccttesbrook bridge (Middlemarch), and on receipt of authority from Wellington the work could be put in hand. —Noted. The Mines Department notified that £250 | had been authorised for the maintenance of the road between Green Island and Brighton, this amount to be a £ for £ subsidy, on that expended by the council and th» Brighton Coal Company.—Received. The Secretary of the New Zealand Automobile Union wrote stating that it had been unanimously agreed to recommend to local bodies that the approaches to all bridges be painted white, and that where necessary boards painted white be erected on bridges and on rabbit gates; also that local bodies should have power to order the trimming or removal of fences or trees on roads where they were calculated to bo a danger. —The inspector was authorised to have trees cut where required. The Otago Hydro-electric .Power Committee advised the council of the decision to raise £2OOO for the purpose of, investigating the most suitable source of supply for electric power for the whole of Otago. lhe committee looked to the council for £loo. Matter deferred for a month,- the clerk to ascertain in the meantime: 1 if the council had power to vote the money. In connection with the proposed road required by Messrs Leishman Bros, and others to convey coal to the Salisbury railway siding some corresnondence askmg that the application be granted was read from Messrs Spencer Brent and Son (solicitors) —Applicants to be notified that they would require thoroughly to prospect the property and ascertain the quality of the coal procurable before the council would consider the proposal. Smith (Henley) requested the council to send eight palnks for placing over Wain's drain. He would do the carting and labour.—The council admitted no liability in the matter. Mr R. W. Ayson (Ngapuna) asked permission to dig a ditch alongside the fence on the road between Fletcher's and his property. —Engineer and member for the riding to report. Mr R. N. Elliott and several other ratepayers at Middlemarch requested the council to take steps.to improve the road leading to their properties.—Engineer to interview the applicants. Messrs Hole Bros. (Outram) asked that a road near their property be attended to.— Engineer to have the road surfaced, the question of metal to be considered later. Mr ■J. M'Eeany (Brighton) complained ' of the condition of the road near his property. —Engineer to report at next meet: ing. . The following appointments of surfacemen were made:—Maungatua, Mr J. M'Bryde; Moonlight, Mr W. Parlane; Hindon, Mr F. Ferguson (on probation); Berwick, Mr R. Petrie. In connection with the flooding of that Taieri, mentioned in the engineer s report, and on which there was a general discussion, the council decided that it would support any movement for the betterment oi the position and to prevent flooding as fax; as possible.. The Mosgiel Brass Band's application foe a subsidy was declined. In connection with the flood waters, tha council granted the application of the Drainage Board to cut the roads in several placet to let the water away. It was resolved to pay the surfacemen 4s per day when using their own horses for the grader.
