GOLF.
The substitute championship competition on the St. Andrews Links, Scotland, ended on June 26 in a tip between Abe Mitchell and George Duncan—the two chief exponents of the younger school of players,—who completed four rounds in 312 strokes each. E. Ray, who had the best score at the end of two rounds, collapsed in the final round, and finished with a score of 315—two strokes more than Harry Vardon, who, by two superb rounds, worked his way from what appeared to be a hopeless position into third place Upon the playing--off of the tie, Mitchell defeated Duncan by 4wo strokes, scoring 77 to 79. Duncan virtually presented the match to Mitchell ot the tenth hole, for which he took eight strokes where three should have sufficed. R. 0. G-ardner won the Auckland Golf
Club's championship, defeating F. Binney by 6 up and 5 to play. The winner of the ladies' bogey match for August was Mrs Oldham—7 down. The Hamilton Ladies' Golf Club has issued the programme of a championship tournament to be held on tho Hamilton golf links on October 8,9, and 10. The winner will hold for a year a cup presented by Mrs Ellis. There are six other competitions.
