DOUBLE FAREWELL SOCIAL.

A double farewell social to Mr and Mrs K. E. M'Donald and Mr Samuel Bews and his sisters attracted a large assemblage to the Mokoreta Public Hall on the Bth inst. A lengthy report In the Wyndham Herald shows • that the two families, who were among the earliest settlers at Mokoreta, were held in the highest esteem, and that the keenest regret was felt at their departure. Mr Wm. Murray, a pioneer settler, presided, and welcomed the visitors from a distance, including Mr A. S. Malcolm, M.P. The two families departing together represented pioneers dating back 40 years. The Bews family were leaving Ivy Bank, round which the social life of the community had centred. They would be succeeded by Mr Robinson, a returned soldier, who would find an ideal home. They would welcome Mr Dynes and his wife, who was a sister of Mrs M'Donald, who was taking Mr M'Donald's farm. At a break in the dance which was entered on with spirit, the chairman presented Mr and Mrs M'Donald with a silver set and tray and a gold brooch to their daughter. Mr J. H. Foster presented a gold albert chain and pendant (inscribed), to Mr Bews, a gold chain and pendant to Miss Vida Bews, and a gold brooch to Miss Annie Bews. The a chairman, Messrs Foster, Barratt, John Craig, Charles M'Kelyie, Duncan M'Rae, George Anderson, jun., Currie, and A. S, Malcolm, M.P., spoke in eulogistic terms of the many good qualities of the two families, their neighbourliness and hospitality. Messrs M'Donald and Bews returned thanks in feeling terms. Songs were sung at intervals during the evening. The quests were given cheers and .musical honours, and " Auld lang syne" and the National Anthem closed a memorable evening.
