ATHLETICS.

By Amatetjb. The One-mil* Handicap, which was held at, Carisbrook on Saturday, the 9th, was run under adverse conditions. Rain had left the track in a heavy, spongy condition, and this, with the bitter wind, made fast time out of the question. When it is considered that practically , all the competitors ware juniors (under 20), the time registered (4min 48' 4-ssec) was good, and suggests that, under favourable conditions, much faster time "may be expected , The winner (L. Edmond, Anglican Harriers, 110 yards) is just getting into form, as on the previous Saturday he ran second to Steel in the Anglican Three-mile Championship. K. Henderson. (Civil Service, 120 yards), in running second, shows he has both pace and staying powers. Though he commenced running only this year, he has won his club's Maiden Race of one and a half miles and the One-mile Postal Cup Handicap. The Anglican Harriers have this season : adopted the race finish to their Saturday runs. All members are handicapped, the first man home receiving three points and the second one. Burk is at present" leading with 9 points, Stael second with 6, and Edmond third with 5. At next meeting of the Otago Centre the Sports Sub-committee will submit a programme for the October sports meeting. The sub-committee in charge of the Fivemale Inter-club Championship has decided to hold this event at Tahuna Park on August 23. The course not compare with the Wingatui course, where so many memorable contests have been held. Practically all the competitors in the Teams' Race are the juniors who have kept the clubs alive while the seniors were doing their country's work, and for that reason the race will be specially- interesting. Many of the runners are untried over the distance. The race is very open, and it will take a shrewd guesser to pick the winning team. I regret to state that by last mail advice was received" that J. Beatson, the craok, distance and cross-country runner, was seriously ill in hospital. I hopa that he will soon be back home, fit and well. ATHLETIC UNION.
