WIDOWS AND ORPHANS.
RESPONSIBILITY OF LOCAL BODIES. CHRISTCHURCH, January 11. A deputation from the Canterbury Trades Council waited upon Sir James Allen this morning asking that more liberal provision be made by the Government for widows and orphans, especially in view of the recent influenza epidemic. Sir James said that no amendment to the Act could be made quickly enough to meet the case, and the matter must come before the Cabinet. The position in regard to the epidemic was that it had been decided that widows and children were to become wards of the State. If no help had been forthcoming he was surprised, but the matter was in the department of the Hon. Mr Russell, to whom it would be referred on his return to Wellington. Though the Government realised its responsibilities, he thought the local bodies should do something.
