FIRES.
WHAKATANE, January 9. A fire occurred shortly after half-past 12 this, morning, completely destroying a block of buildings consisting of the King's Pictures Theatre and the following shops;—Mr Jury (draper), Mr Thompson (confectionery), Mr Green (blacksmith). Mr Lawrence (saddler), Mr Stark (bootmaker), Mr Follas (boot maker), and Miss Lynch (musio classroom). The fire obtained a firm hold before it was discovered. Fortunately it was a calm night. Tho brigade did excellent work, and prevented tho fire from spreading to ad jacent wooden buildings. The total losses on stocks and buildings are over £6OOO. The insurances aggregate , £2489, in the New Zealand, South British, and Standard Offices.
WELLINGTON, January 9. --Messrs Levin and Co. have received -word that their big whaii shed at Kaikoura, with the contents, were destroyed by fire this morning.
