AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By Digger. The Auckland Racing Club's spring meeting, which was postponed owing to the epidemic, was held on January 4, and was a great success; the totalisator figures showing an increase, of £19)004- on the spring meeting of 1917. No doubt the visitors to the summer meeting were (responsible for the increase. The amount put through the totalisator for the four days' racing at Ellerslic- was £263,170, which is a New Zealand record. During ' the four days' racing hprses trained at headquarters 'were only successful in five of the minor events including a double won by Loyal Arch and Spanner. Spanner showed a glimpse of his true form by winning two races in good style, now he has learned to gallop in races ho should go on winning as he has always shown great form on the track. ■Haute-re, who wpn the Great Northern Steeplechase of 1912, broke his leg during the running'of the Onchunga Steeplechase and had to be destroyed. The win of The Channel was very popular aa he was running in the interests of a widow who lost her husband through the epidemic. , If Teka had won the Mitchelson Cup, instead of running second, a fair amount of money would have changed hands as the Teka —Silver Link combination was well supported. Gazique is generally regarded as a sprinter, but from the way he finished in third position in the Mitchelson Cup he should be seen to advantage in races extending over a mile and a-quarter. Peneton run a good race in the Steeplechase and with a little more experience should pay his way over big fences. Gooxl stakes are easily won at the Auckland Racing .Club's spring meeting. The Great Northern Guineas and Welcome Stakes, each of which carry a stake of lOOOsovs, were won by horses that failed in minor events at the summer meeting. Lady owners were very successful at Ellorslie. winning fivs races. Uncle Ned (twice), The Channel, Kaw, and Crenides winning their races in the nomination of a lady. - i Form Up is evidently on the down-grade for he failed to run prominent in any of the races he contested. Athens II won the Guineas easily, but the field was only moderate. Kipling, the half-brother _ to Bobrikoff, had every opportunity to win the Guineas had he been good enough. As it was, ho was rather fortunate in getting second place. . * Hetaua, the Welcome Stake's winner, is a well-grown youngster, and though he could not successfully compete with the best two-year-olds racing at present, age should improve him. Parorangi; who showed promise in the spring, has made no improvement in the meantime, for his showing in the Welcome Stakes was very.poor. - The four hurdle races decjded at Ellerslia were divided between Ditto and Loyal Arch, each winning a doublo. Notability shaped well for a beginner in running Ditto to half a length in the Maiden Hurdles. He should not be long in landing a stake. After her easy win in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, Red Ribbon looks to have a great chanco in the Wellington Cup with 8.1 in the saddle. Silver Link won the Shorts Handicap very easily in fast time, and with 131 b less to carry, "in the Telegraph, at Wellington, she should run well though the company will be more select.

THE STARTING QUESTION. TO THB BDITOB. Sib; — In view of the controversy with regard to the beat method of starting horses, and of some comment on the starting at Ashburton on Boxing Day, please allow me to present a few views from the standpoint of the supporters of the yards system. Firstly, regarding the starting at Ashburton. There were always two, and in moat races three, stewards at the ptart of each race through the day, and at the conclusion of the meeting the stewards met and talked affairs over with Mr Norman, the starter. The unanimous opinion of all was that the starting had been quite satisfactory, and I may add that one or two of the stewards who had previously been opposed to the yards system expressed their complete satisfaction with the results of Mr Norman’s efforts. In further corroboration of the ouccess of the yards system at Ashburton I have this week received a letter from the chairman of a Trotting Club that had hitherto started its races the clock, in which he states that, after seeing the starting at Ashburton, he is quite satisfied that if is the better and fairer system, and that he intends to do what he can to influence his committee to start by the yards system at future meetings. , The whole argument of the opponents to the yards system appears to be based on tho presumption that a horse will not stand and go, and in an interview recently published some of tho leading trainers are reported to have spoken to that effect, and yet, curiously enough, we find that on occasions, when meetings clash, as, for instance, Auckland, Christchurch, West Coast, and Southland at the New iear, these trainers who are reported to have said that it is unreasonable, or impassible, to educate a hors© to start from a stand, leave their home district whore the starting is by the clock, and travel all the way to Auckland and Southland to race their horses from a standing start. This alone is sufficient to prove that the argument is not a serious one, and that if the yards system was universally adopted no more would be hoard on that point. Many trainers will remember with me how eight or 10 years ago, before the moving-up start was introduced, the horses used to stand on their marks and move off correctly, and in those days w© rarely heard of any starting troubles, and it is only since the moving-up start was inaugurated that these constant disqualifications and these constant oases of a horse beating the starter have occurred. Many will have noted the starting at a recent meeting in Canterbury, where not only Were two or three horses called off for going before their time, hut that several horses during the day’s raoi*jf heat the starter by one to two seconds without being detected. I was present at the Southland races for the New car, and the starting in tho trotting races, was excellent during the three'days. Mr Norman had big fields to control, and it .was noted not only how steadily the horses stood on their marks, but also how ip race after race they moved off without hesitation or mishap. On the third day Mr Norman came to me and said, “How is it that in Canterbury it is said that horses will not stand and start when yon see that in Southland there is no trouble whatever in their doing so?” The reply was that horses will start if they are properly educated, excepting the small proportion who will not start under any system; hut until we have one universal system there will be trouble. I asked Mr Norman (who is acknowledged to be one of the best starters • of trotting horses in tho Dominon, what was his personal opinion - ,with regard to clock and yards, and his reply was most emphatic—that his experience had convinced him that the yards system was batter, fairer, and more satisfactory than the clock, and ho believed that in time all clubs would come to the same _ conclusion. That he is correct in his surmise is. probably true, for, as was recently pointed out by a correspondent, for SO years starting in New Zealand was by time, but owing to the constant and growing troubles clubs are on© by one abandoning the clock, .so that at the commencement of this season 11 clubs had superseded the clock for yards, and since then the Camara Club on Labour Day for the first time started by yards, aud 1 under this system the starting was a success, and the most satisfactory yet experienced by the club. Manawatu on Boxing Day al«8 joined, the ranks of the yards clubs, and now we have Wellington - deciding to start some of the races on their progamme this month by the yards system. If the clock is satisfactory as its supporters state, and tho yards system so unsatisfactory, how can it be explained that club after club is abandoning the second's for the yards? It would appear as though the clock supporters are in much- the same position as were the supporters of the moving-up start for gallopers in years gone by, and the same arguments are being brought forward now as then. That wo will ever find a perfect system of starting horses is more than doubtful; but after 20 years’ racing experience, and with some knowledge of the horse and his manners, and as a close student of starting methods, I must fully endorse Mr Norman’s opinion that the yard's is fairer and more satisfactory than starting by the clock.—l am, etc., H. P. Nicoll. Ashburton, January 8, 1919.
