CAVE (South Canterbury)

Juno 10. —The weather in April was line and dry. We had rain on five days, but a total of" .74in for the month. In tho month of May we had rain on three days, but the total for the month was-only ,20in. This has been the driest May for at least 16 years, and is a great contrast to May of last year, when 3.79 in fell.

Social. —A welcome home was tendered to Mr John Lawlar at Monavalo school on May 28. Mr J. Lawlar sold his farm some two years ago, enlisted, wont- to France, and saw some of the heavy fighting there. Ho was gassed and put out of action after two years hard work, so his old friends gavo him hearty welcome home. He said there was a lot of hard work to do out in France yet. and there was time enough for those who had not been there to go and do their bit. He hoped that those who had to go would do their best to see it through, and act liko men. Send off. —On May 29 a send off was tendered to Donald McMaster in the Canningfon Sc/hoohocm. Thero was a large attendance. Mr D. MoMaster has been here since the Levels were settled. JTo came as a lad, and all liked to secDonald as lie was called. Ho came, down from Trentham on final leave, and the settlers gave him a wristlet watch and bade him farewell. All his friends hope to see him back soon to his wife and child. Presentation.—On May 29 at the Carrington School the teacher waa given a presentation on her leaving the school. _ The present was an ebony backed hand mirror. The residents of the district wished her every happiness in the future.
