Juno 7- —The effort made on behalf of the ''British Prisoners of War Fund" waa

most successful, £132 being collected. The district was thoroughly canvassed tor subscriptions, lists being'sent to the various stations, and a house to house collection being made in tho township. 'Hie local Red Cross Guild held a sale of produce, sweets, fancy goods, etc., and also ran a hoop-la tabie, lortimc-telling, and guessing competitions. Tho soldiers took a keen interest in tho proceedings, and it was mainly through their efforts and tho untiring zeal of tho ladies of the Kcd Cross Guild that the total result was so satisfactory. In tho evening a social was held in Queen Mary hospital, and a collection taken up amounted to £6 18s. Songs wero sung by Mrs Heald, Capt. Clifton, Serg. Major "Foster, Slerg. Major Beconsall; a recitation by Serg Maylett, violin selection by Gunner Marshall, weight lifting and balancing by Corporal Paltridgo and Private Modrick, and a selection by tho Queen Mary Hospital ragtime band. Tho music for the dances was played by Messrs Jackson and Johnston. The following aro the principal amounts collected.—Mr D. Stewart's list, £26 2s; St. Helen's station, £6; St. James' station (per Mr Rush, £5 17s; State Forest (per Mr Morrison), £5 19s; Mr Godfrey Rutherford (Lochiel) £lO j Red Cross stall, £35 13s 8d ; Hoop-la ' table, £l9 5s 6d; Collection at social, £6 18s. A tray donated by Serg. Major Noonan, and raffled by Serg. Major Noonan and Serg. Sheppard, realised £ls, and a box of perfume raffled by Private Munro. £4. Social.—Tito usual weekly social was held in Queen Mary Hospital on Thursday night, and was much enjoyed by all present. Songs wero sung by Mrs Heald. Mrs Gillies. Miss Stewart, Serg. Major Foster, Sergt. Maylett, and Mr Hall, and) a pianoforte solo given by Miss Buchanan. During the evening, Capt. Clifton, on behalf ot tho inmates of the hospital made presentations to Serg. Major Kemp, Serg. Woods, Privates Marlow and Grant, all of whom aro joining the staff of a hospital ship. Serg. Major Kemp suitably responded, thanking the boys for tho presents, and wishing all tho patients a speedy return to health.
