ENGLISH OPINION OP NEW ZEALAND " There is a distinct revival in Shorthorn breeding - in New Zealand (says the Live Stock Journal, of London), but the two islands cannot agree as to type—more's the pity. The type of dairy Shorthorn apparently aimed at by North Island advocates does not, however, commend itself to those who favour the more robust type of the English dairy Shorthorn, and they argue that a Shorthorn cow built on the lines of a Jersey will not have the constitution of the deep-chested English type. In the South Island the development of Shorthorn breeding is more on the lines of the beef type, and Canterbury dairy Shorthorn herds have of late years gone much to beef. Dairy cows are, however, not in the same demand in the South Island as in the North, and it is grazing cattle rather than milkers that are required." ROMNEY MARSH SHEEP BREEDERS' ASSOCIATION. The annual report states that the income for the year exceeded the expenditure by £lO3 18s 7d. During the year a further £2OO was invested in war bonds, now making a total holding of £6OO of bonds and certificates. The amount of accumulated funds of the association at December 31 was £l3ll 9s 2d. The. past year has been a record one for the large number of transfers dealt wi>.h by the council, and for the new flocks admitted for registration in the Flock Book. Volume XIV, to be published this year, will contain particulars of 49 new flocks entered since the previous year. The council decided to keep all members absent from New Zealand on active service financial in respect to 'heir membership subscriptions. The council has given considerable time to the question of consolidation of flock books, as suggested by the Board of Agriculture. It feels sure that with safeguards for the admission of the Rornney flocks appearing in the South Island Flock Book, the position of the New Zealand Romney Marsh Association will bo strengthened.
