THE PICTURES.

The Dunedin picture theatres continue to draw large attendances at the various sessions. Emily Stevens, in "Daybreak," opens this week in Wellington, and, judging by tho inquiries made as to the date of its release, Emily Stevens is certainly "some" actress —her screen stories are always out of the ordinary. "The Daughter of Destiny" is a screen, story which throws an interesting light on the subject of morganistic manages. In this play Mine. Petrova takes tho role of Marion Ashley, who first marries a worthless artist named Jorn. He is a spy, and eventually .causes it to bo believed that ho is -dead. Marion then contracts a morganatic mariage with the Prince Leopold of Belmark. The two are passionately fond of each other. The story then relates the intrigues of another powerful country against Belmark, and includes the dramatic reappearance of Jorn. Sensation follows sensation, and the subsequent trend of events brings a stormy and exciting picture to a happy conclusion. The picture is altogether a memorable one.

"The Winding Trail" is Metro's latest New Zealand release. When a caravan crossing thp desert ia refused a supply of water ■bf the bandit Waldo, the girl (Viola Dnrjh dresses as a child, goes to him, and finally softens his heart. A Mexican reveals her subterfuge, and is about to hold her, when ho discovers she is looking for Steele, who has wronged her sister. He lets her go on condition that she brings Steele to him. (This she succeeds in doing. Waldo then forces his wifc,_ whom he has ill-treated because of a previous affair with Steele, to choose between them; she fires and Steele falls. The bandit then tolls his wife she is free to go her own way; but the girl, her venjreanee satisfied, eventually brings the husband and wife together again.
