LUMDSEN.

February 25.—Glorious weather is being experienced for the harvesting, which is now in full swing, and some very fine orops have* been opened up during the last fortnight. The shortage of labour, however, is being severely felt, and) all classes and conditions of men are being pressed with service for stooking, etc. • . New Buildings.—Plans are now completed of a row of very fine shops to replace those destroyed by the recent fire. Mr Macpherson has'decided to rebuild the block m concrete with an up-to-date cantilever verandah fronting the lot, and as the job is to be goae on with right away we shall soon have our main street more in keeping with other towns. The postal authorities have made no move so far in the erection of a now post office; but it is to be hoped that the public will not be expected to put up with the temporary office provided very long, as it is inconveniently placed, and the approach of winter will add to the disadvantages connected therewith. Head Master.—Mr Robert IST. "Wilson, at present head teacher at Kennington, was selected from a large number of applicants to fill the vacancy of head teacher at the local school, and will commence his duties at an early date. School Residence. —The Education Boards architect, Mr M'Caw, visited Lumsden on Saturday to-confer with the local committee re the school residence. " After inspection it was decided to make very extensive improvements to the building and grounds, and altogether bring the house and appointments up to date. Personal. —Mr Geo. P. Johnson, our local storekeeper, lias been laid aside with.a very severe illness; but I am pleased to h? able to report that he is now on the road to recovery, and his family expect to have him home again shortly.—Mr Donald Fraser has also had to down tools and go for a change of air at the instance of his medical adviser, and we trust the spell will be of benefit to him. Back Prom the "War. —Priyate Bob Key returned home from the war last week, and received a hearty welcome at the station from relatives and friends. He was twice severely wounded, and it will be a long time yet before he entirely recovers from his wounds. Military Training.—A military camp will be held in the Recreation Grounds early next month, and the band of the Eighth Southland Regiment will also be here, and have promised to render musical programmes on different occasions, which will be very much appreciated by the residents of Lumsden.
