YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION.

RED TRIANGLE DAY. A publio meeting, called by the Mayor of the city, was neld in tho Town Hall on the 7th for the purpose of forming ■ a Citizens' Committee ui furtherance of the Red Triangle Day campaign of the Y.M.C.A. for the support of its military work in France and the other war zones. There was a fairly large attendance, including about a dozen ladies. i The Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark) introduced the business.' Mr J. B. Waters, speaking of the requirements by tho association for 1918, said they wanted £1 for every man who had gone to the front from New Zealand. Some months ago Auckland had been asked to f:ubscrib.3 £20,000, and it subscribed £48,000. That left about £75,000 to be raised by the other provinces, and the quota for Otago as assessed on a population basis was £15,000. So they were not asking for a hugo sum. Fifteen thousand pounds for a wealthy province like Otago did not seem a very large sum. Taking it per head,- it only worked out at £1 per man who was fighting for the colours The sum asked for would provide comforts and necessities to be supplied by the organisation. If each did his little bit they would get these quite easily. Tho association was only an agent, and contributors would bo giving Ciircctly to rhe men at the front. It was resolved to enclose the appeal, and a committee was set up to carry the campaign. Sub-committees were appointed and arrangements made. Mr G. L. Denniston received a letter from tho county clerk of tho Vincent County stating that their chairman, Mr S. T. Spain, of Earriscleugh, had decided to devote out of his honorarium of £IOO, tlie sum of £SO to tho Salvation Army War Fund appeal, the other £SO to go to the Y.M.C.A. He enclosed a cheque for £8 6s Bd, and stated that j>ayments of £8 6s 8d would be made bi-monthly. A: meeting was held in Mosgiel on Friday evening to take the necessary steps to r collect in the district in aid of the Salvation Army war work. The Mayor of Mosgiel {Mr A. F. Quelch) presided, and he was supported by Captain Tong, of the local Salvation Army Corps. The attendance was disappointing. Mr Quelch and Captain Tong spoke at length on the various branch;.* of the army's activities, not only amongst tho soldiers, but amongst the relatives. It was resolved to circulate lists for subscriptions this week, and permits could be obtained by all desiring to assist. WELLINGTON'S EFFORTS.
