TUAPEKA COUNTY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Tuakeka County Council was held on Friday. Present—Messrs P. M'lnerncy (chairman), Brown, M'DonBild, M'Lennan, Simpson, Cotton, Herbert, Rogers, Bennetts. CORRESPONDENCE. From Sinclair Wright, stating that his neighbours' cattle were destroying his flax. He hoped the council would stop tiie nuisance.—The .. :-k was instructed to write to , Mr Wright asking him to give a paddock <and to consent to'act as pound-keeper. From Sheehy and Keppell, Millers Flat, calling attention to the condition of the culvert opposite their flaxinill. They' offered to do any stone carting that was required.—The council agreed to make tho repairs. From T. Bolton, secretary to Waipori Commonage Committee, asking for the council's pennission to erect a gate on Maden City Hill, Waipori, to stop stock going on or off the Commonage.— Request granted. From Duncan C. Rose, manager for Mr B. Throp, Moa Flat Downs, drawing the attention of the council to the state of the Main road between Moa Flat Downs woolshed and the Ettrick Creek Crossing.—Road to bo inspected. From O. Anderson, Tuapeka Mouth, drawing tho attention of tho council to contract No. 882, for which he was the successful tenderer. There was still a portion of the contract money standing, and he should like to get something additional as the nature of the work was much more difficult than he had expected.—Granted an additional £a» From Todd Bros, and Co., licriot, applying for relief in connection with county rates on account of various clients. A long discussion took-* place on this communication, .in which Mr Moore, the county solicitor, took part. Ultimately, on the motion of Mr Rogers, seconded by Cr Bennetts, it was resolved that the rates which had been tendered in January, and which the clerk had refused to accept, be exempted from.the 10 per cent, penalty. engineer's report. The engineer reported:—Benger Biding had been visited by another severe thunderstorm. The Bengerburn rose to a great height, damaging the approaches of tho bridge leading to Topham's nursery, also damaging tho ford. Had got damage to bridge and ford repaired. The culvert on road opposite Mr Thomson's, at Ettrick, being so small, forced-'tho water down tho side of tho road, flooding to a good extent Mr Smith's orchard. Had agreed witn Mr Smith to assist in putting in a new culvert—Teviot Riding: Teviot River —In conjunction with Mr Doake he had made careful inspection as to erection of pier in centro of river. At present there was 4ft Gin of water and tho foundation as oxposed would bo very unsatisfactory. Ho strongly recommended that two new* abutments bo put in. These would not cost any more than tho proposed pier in the centre of the stream. —Crooliston Riding: Ho recommended that the pinch on Edie's road, near Edievale, about five chains, bo metalled.—Gabriel's Riding: Considerable

damage had again been done up east bank of Clutha River, several culverts, etc., being blocked up. —Breakneck road from town boundary to top of Breakneck was in need of repair. NOTICE OF MOTION. Cr Rogers gave notice of motion that at the next meeting of the council he would move:—"That, in order to prevent the cutting up and damage to roads by traction engine traffic during the winter months, this council agrees to-adopt a by-law prohibiting traction engine traffic on all roads within the county from Juno 15 to September 15. Penalty, £2O, unless traffic within such period is granted a permit in writing by the council."
