KARAMU THOROUGHBREDS.
A SUCCESSFUL SALE, The final dispersal of the late Hon. J. D. Ormond's racing stud, for many years the largest of its kind in the dominion, took place on Monday. The sale attracted to Hawke's Bay buyers from all parts of New Zealand. In all 107 lots were disposed of for a total of 8299 guineas. The three stallions were disposed of as follows: —Knig Mark, by Marco—Galeta, Mr J. Ormond, 400 gs; Hymettus, by Cyllene—Sweet Balsam, Mr W. Cooper, Mastertoai, 325g5; and! Birkdale, by Birkenhead—Thame, Mr H. A. Russell, Hastings, 150 gs. Mr W. Cooper, of Masterton, was a big buyer. He paid 600 guineas for Hymestra's dam, Straga, by Birkenhead—Witc'het, this being the top price of the sale. He also secured nine other Birkenhead mares, at prices ranging from 160 gs to 19gs, the last-named figure being paid for Selene, the dam of Daytime. Several of the mares were accompanied by foals, besides being in foal again, so that, with the stallion Hymettus also included in his purchases, Mr Ccopex secured the nucleus of a fino etud. Mr D. H. Roberts, the owner of Fiery Cross, was also among the buyers, three mares falling to his bid. They were By By, by Birkenhead—Taihoa, with filly foal by Hymettus, 45gs; Ideala, by Birkenhead— Idea, with colt foal by Hymettus, 60gs; and Outward, by Birkenhead—Outer, 40gs. The mares will go to his stud in the Manawatu, and will in due course be mated with Mr Roberts's imported hoTse, Sarto, by St. Simon Mr A. Boyle, of Christchurch, paid 115 gs for a six-year-old gelding by Hymettus— Temerity, and 75gs for a three-year-old fiilv by Hymettus —Mobility. Mr A. Murdoch, of Dvmedin, the owner of Kilboyne, secured eight lots, as follows: Mare," by Birkenhead—Dreadnette, 6yrs, 35gs ; filly by King Mark—Links, 3yrs, 30gs; gelding by King Mark—Woodquest, 45gs: gelding bv Hymettus—Vega-, 3yrs, 25gs; filly by King "Mark— Chantress, 3yrs, 20gsj filly by
Hymettus—T.emeraire, lyr, 40gs ; filly by Maori King—Lyrique, lyr, 20gs; and filly by Hymettfls— By By, 60gs. The yearling sister to Hymestra and Torfreda, by Hymettus—Staga, was secured at <K)ogs by Mr A. M'Donald, of Masterton, the owner of Torfreda. The three sons of the. late Hon. J. D. Ormond wero purchasers at the sale, and it is understood that they all contemplate racing horses of their own breeding later on.
