Horowhenua's twelfth annual show took place on Wednesday, and was opened by the Minister of Agriculture in the presence of a large crowd of people. In the course of an interesting speech, the Hon. W. D. S. Mao Donald touched upon the question of settling soldiers on the land. The fact must not "be forgotten, he said, that unless the soldiers who take up land wore subsidised they would not be able to carry on. The best land costs from £4O to £SO per acre, and with fencing wire at £6O and galvanised iron at £IOO per ton, the Government Land Commissioners had a difficult task to contend with. The land offered by the M'Donald Estate trustees, ho understood, was excellent, and he hoped to be able to go over the property with the Prime Minister (Hon. W. F. Massey), and trusted that some kind of a deal would be made satisfactory to all concerned. They could not do too much for the boys who had done so much for them. The "Dominion was prosperous and would be so 'after the war; but the great loss was the human one. Tho community's greatest task was in helping to win the war. Tho poorest man in New Zealand was better off than the boy in the trenches, who deserved his country's best. In conclusion, the Minister said that after tho war it was to be hoped that capital and labour would co-operate for the good of tho country as a whole and the advancement of industries. In the cattle classes the purebred cows were fair. The prize cow stood out from the others, though the runner-up showed good dairy points. The prize-winners in the two-year-old class were well up to show form, and the yearlings were an even lot. In most classes the Ayrshire exhibits wore good. Though some wanted more condition, the majority were fit for any show. A distinct improvement was shown in the class of Romney sheep penned. Thero was little competition in Lincolns. The fat sheep were good. Horses were an even lot, but in tho draught classes the Central Development Farm. Weraroa, had practically no competition, and consequently annexed all the main awards. Championships. The championships were: Jersey cow. R. D. Harkness; Jersey bull, J. D. Brown; Friesians, Central Development Farm ; milking Shorthorns. Central Development Farm; Ayrshires. T. H. Colpman; butter-fat (cup). J. Morgan; best cow in show (purebred classes). S. Bowker; medals for sheep, Weggery Bros, and W. E. Weightman.
