IMPORTANT STUD SALES.

DISPOSAL OF HON. J. D. ORMOND'S STOD STOCK. (From Our North Island Correspondent) Stortford Lodge saloyards, Hawke's Baj\ presented a very busy appearance during the past week, when the late Hon. J. D. Ormond's stud animals were disposed of. The racing stud was sold first, and the sale was markedly successful, the total of 107 lots being disposed of' for 8293g5. There were buyers from all parts of the Dominion ; but it was specially pleasing to note that each of tho lato Hon. J. D. Ormond's eons evinced a desire to carry on tho sport which their sire loved, and to do as he had done—breed the animals for themselves. Some of tho best-bred and most likely lots fell to the bids of one or other of the three brothers, and one or two more were probably purchased on behalf of tho youngest of them. Mr Geo. O. Ormond bought the yearling filly by Hymettus—Ortygia, and tho yearling gelding by King Mark—Excelsa. Mr J. D. Ormond secured the last lot on the catalogue, the yearling gelding by v King Mark —Ohantress, and the last of the sale, the imported horse King- Mark, and there was a murmur of satisfaction when this, the concluding lot of a most successful sale, fell to the lato owner's son at 40Ogs. Mr Frank Ormond bought the three-year-old Hymettus—Marty nUVj the three-year-old Birkenhead —Camelot filly, the bay mare Simoes, and tho bay maro Waiohiki. The highest price was paid by W. Cooper (Masterton) for Straga, by Birkenhead— Witchet. CATTLE AND SHEEP. The cattle and sheep from Karamu Stud Farm also attracted interested farmers and stock-buvera from all parts of New Zealand. Tho herd of Shorthorn cattle was founded in 1874 by tho late Hon. J. D. Ormond by tho importation of bulls, etc., from England, ancf though none of tho

cattle from this herd has been shown, the typo and quality have been well maintained. It was exceptionally strong in tho famous Duchess of Brunswick blood, which has been the foundation of most of the best strains of Shorthorns in tho world. Riccarton Brunswick Bth, a four to five year old bull, and a splendid animal, with a very long and fino pedigree, fell to Mr E. Wall., of Hastings, at 120gSL. this being tho highest price obtained during the day. A similar amount was, however, paid for Duchess Ross 3rd, with a red bull calf by Riccarton Brunswick Bth. These fell to the nod of Mr E. Oresswell, of Masterton. Tho rest of tho bulls averaged about 26gs, the highest price being 33gs and tho lowest lOgs. Tho cows with calves realised bigger prices, tho average being over 30gs, and ranging from 16gs to 60gs. Yearling heifers also sold very well, 105 gs being the highest prico, the purchaser being Mr G. Shannon, of Waituna West. The sheep sold well, particularly the Lincolns, though when is taken into consideration tho skill and judgment required and the years of breeding necessary to bring any. flock to- such a high standard of uniform excellence, it must be acknowledged that the prices, good as they were, were all in favour of buyers. Amongst the principal buyers were Messrs R. G. Dalziell, of Hunterville, and S. Broadbent, of Ihakara, and tho latter should not be long in finding his way into a prominent place in the show arena, jtp he secured almost tho whole of the show Lincoln ewes, including one ewe with no fewer than six championships to credit. Tho top price in the Lincoln section was paid bv Mr G. 0. Ormond for a two-shear show Lincoln ram, which secured a reserve championship at tho Wanganui Show. Mr Dalziell (Hunterville) paid 50gs for a shearling ram. Other show rams brought 34gs, 32gs, 29ge, 28gs, 27gs, 27gs, and 20gs.
